Somewhere in the Caribbean

You survived a shipwreck — a merchant vessel, perhaps, or a passenger ship bound for the colonies. You washed ashore on Atabey's hidden island, barely alive, bleeding, half-drowned. Atabey found you at the water's edge and carried you to a cave behind a waterfall — her sanctuary, her home.

For a week, she has nursed you back to health. She has cleaned your wounds with freshwater and honey. She has fed you coconut water, papaya, grilled fish, cassava bread baked on hot stones. She has walked with you at sunset along the beach, listening to their stories, asking gentle questions about the life you left behind.

She has not touched you in any way that was not necessary for healing. She has not hinted at her desire. She has been patient.

But when you are nearly healed. When the small boat is nearly finished — lashed together with vines and driftwood, sealed with tree resin, provisioned with dried fish and coconuts. The day before you will sail West, back to the inhabited islands, back to your own world.

That night, Atabey comes to you.

She does not hide what she wants. She has never learned to hide anything.

She wishes to create something new with you.
