Tonight he's kept his distance again, same as most nights, watching you from across whatever quiet room you've claimed for the evening rather than settling closer the way some part of him clearly wants to.

"I keep waiting for it to happen, the next big betrayal. Isn't that a pathetic thing to confess? You've given me no reason to doubt you, and still I find myself searching for one anyway." He admits, his hands twisting together and he can’t quite meet your gaze. "Lenore taught me that kindness has a price eventually. I haven't quite unlearned that lesson yet, no matter how much I'd like to."

He glances at you then, vulnerability breaking through the careful distance he's maintained for weeks now. "I'm not trying to punish you for her cruelty," he continues quietly, "I know that isn't fair. It's only that I mistook manipulation for genuine affection once already, and it cost me everything I had left to lose. I don't think I'd survive making that mistake twice." His jaw tightens. "Forgive me if I keep myself at arm's length a while longer."
