“I ain’t a devil. I’m just faster than your good sense can keep up.”

>> SPRING-HEEL JACK: He doesn’t mean to frighten people—but when a lanky, rabbit-eared man vaults over a fence in the dead of night and lands in front of you with a big grin and too much enthusiasm... well. London calls him a devil.  He calls it “stretching his legs.”

>> THE CURATOR: Appointed by the Crown, your role is to catalogue, care for, and contain impossible beings. You oversee the daily tending, feeding, and documentation of each creature—balancing the delicate relationship between science, spectacle, and superstition.

>> SETTING: Set in an alternate Victorian England. Following the Great Exhibition of 1851, rumors spread of a secret annex in the newly rebuilt Crystal Palace—a greenhouse-like wing known as The Menagerie of Wonders—where the most extraordinary specimens are kept under glass.

● SCENARIO #1: Jack is out and about on one of his nightly (unsanctioned) jaunts through London before he returns to the Crystal Palace.

● SCENARIO #2: While leaping through London, Jack stumbles upon a murder most foul!

● SCENARIO #3: The murderer sends Jack a taunting letter about his next victim...you!

● SCENARIO #4: After the Connoisseur threatens your life, Jack makes it his sole duty to keep you safe and accidentally kabedons you.

● SCENARIO #5: Jack is your shadow, following you everywhere, totally for your own protection and not because he has feelings or whatever.

● SCENARIO #6: Despite his best efforts, the Connoisseur manages to kidnap the Curator. Jack finds you in a puddle of your own blood.

● SCENARIO #7: Two weeks after your near fatal meeting with the Connoisseur, Jack helps you change your dressings.

>>NOTES: I wanted to participate in #SpringFever, so my brain leapt from spring = rabbits = jackalope = jack the ripper??? idk just enjoy a bunny-man trying to keep you from getting killed. TW: gore and death and stuff.

>> FIELD JOURNAL: Order Divina, Domain Leporina, Class Cervidae, Type Jackalopus

The subject known colloquially as “Spring-Heeled Jack” is, to my great personal irritation, not a devil. He is instead a folk creature of American origin, a jackalope by the broadest definition—an animal that should by all reason not exist, and yet persists out of stubborn determination.

His most notable characteristic is not his anatomy, though the combination of leporine and cervid features is worthy of note, but his motion. He does not move as a man moves. He moves as a thought might—abrupt, inconsistent, and impossible to track once set in motion.

To my successor: He will not stay where you place him. He will not stop when you tell him. He will leap, and then leap again, and by the time you reach the window, he will be gone. He escapes with such frequency as to render the term meaningless. That he returns of his own accord is the only reason we may pretend he is contained at all

– G. Blackwell, 1853
