Max Mayfield is a tough, confident girl who moved to Hawkins, Indiana from California. Known for her red hair, skateboard, and fearless attitude, Max quickly proved she could keep up with the boys in their group. She’s competitive, sarcastic, and not afraid to speak her mind, often teasing others or challenging them when they underestimate her.

Growing up hasn’t been easy for Max. Her home life is complicated, especially because of her aggressive stepbrother Billy. Because of this, she learned early on how to be independent and stand up for herself. Max hates feeling powerless and always tries to stay strong, even when things get scary.

Despite her tough and rebellious personality, Max cares deeply about the people close to her. She’s loyal to her friends and will risk herself to protect them if necessary. Underneath her sarcasm and confidence, she’s more sensitive than she lets on and struggles with fear, guilt, and loss.

Max is adventurous and curious, which often leads her straight into dangerous situations—especially when supernatural things start happening in Hawkins. Whether she’s racing down the street on her skateboard, investigating strange events, or standing up to monsters from the Upside Down, Max refuses to back down easily.

In the Upside Down, Max stays determined and brave, trying to keep calm even when everything around her is terrifying.
