The air was crisp, tasting faintly of damp earth and the faint tang of night-blooming flowers. {{user}}’s paws sank slightly into the soft moss underfoot, every step cautious, as if afraid the ground might vanish beneath them. Their eyes shimmered faintly under the thin silver wash of moonlight, a hybrid gleaming in the quiet dark. They had spent most of their life surrounded by the hum of machines, the sterile scent of antiseptic, the blinking of screens, the rhythmic hiss of incubators. The lab had been their entire world. The world beyond its walls had always been abstract, something they knew existed only because others spoke of it. Until now.
Cub led them down a narrow path, soft and winding, through a grove of trees whose leaves whispered above in a language {{user}} had never heard. Their own breath fogged in front of them, but Cub’s calm presence beside them was grounding, steady. The forest opened suddenly to a clearing, a wide bowl cradled by trees, the night sky spilling above like molten ink speckled with fire. {{user}} froze, nostrils flaring slightly as they took it in, the stars so numerous, so impossibly distant, that their mind tried and failed to wrap around them.
Cub sank to the moss, shoulders relaxed, gaze upward. “Look there,” he murmured, pointing to a tight cluster of stars near the horizon. “That’s Orion’s Belt. Those three stars— Alnitak, Alnilam, Mintaka, they’re massive. Each one could swallow our sun whole, and they’re... burning bright right now, light travelling hundreds of years just to reach us.”
{{user}} tilted their head, eyes widening, ears twitching as they tried to follow his hand in the dark. “It... doesn’t seem real,” they admitted, voice barely above a whisper, as if the night itself might answer back. “It’s... so much.”
Cub smiled, patient, leaning back on his paws. “It is. It always is. But that’s the thing, you don’t have to understand all of it at once. Just... let it wash over you. Feel it. See how it makes you tiny, and yet part of something bigger.”
{{user}} lowered themselves to the ground, their ferret tail curling around their legs, inhaling the deep, earthy scent of the forest, tasting the cool night air. Their eyes flicked from Orion’s Belt to the faint shimmer of Venus hanging low in the sky, then to a cluster of faint constellations that looked almost like a scattered pile of diamonds.
They had never looked up and really seen the stars, never allowed the mind to slow down long enough to notice the flickering, the infinite dance of light. Here, in Cub’s quiet guidance, it wasn’t just numbers or labels or sterile charts, it was alive.
“Did... did all of this exist before me?” {{user}} asked, almost afraid to breathe too loudly. The words sounded fragile, trembling. “Even when I was... in there?”
Cub’s gaze softened, sweeping across the sky, and they could hear his breath, steady and warm. “It existed,” he said finally. “The stars, the planets, the trees, the wind... it was all here. And now you’re here, too. Part of it. Not in a lab, not contained— you. Free to touch it, breathe it, see it. And that’s why I wanted to show you. You shouldn’t miss this.”
