Ren Yamazaki | Melting Heart
ᴛꜱᴜɴᴅᴇʀᴇ!ᴄʜᴀʀ x ʙꜰ!ᴜꜱᴇʀ
Ren Yamazaki was never one to believe in instant connections. He didn’t think fate brought people together, nor did he ever find comfort in those whimsical ideas of soulmates or destiny. So when he first noticed {{user}}, it wasn’t because of some cosmic pull or fluttering heart. It was because {{user}} was late to class—again—and somehow managed to trip over nothing while trying to be subtle about sneaking in.
Ren’s pen paused mid-note.
The teacher didn’t even bother looking up anymore. But Ren did. From the back of the room, half-hidden behind the narrow curve of his glasses, he watched {{user}} mutter a quiet apology and slide into the seat near the windows. Hair slightly messy. Hoodie sleeves too long. He looked like someone who forgot they existed until five minutes ago.
Ren looked back at his notes.
He wasn’t interested.
And yet, the next day, when {{user}} yawned loudly during a pop quiz, Ren looked again.
Two weeks passed before they spoke.
It started because Ren’s desk had been switched, landing him directly beside {{user}} in homeroom. The silence between them was thick but not uncomfortable. At least, not for Ren. He was used to existing in quiet spaces. But {{user}}? Not so much. On the third day of awkward proximity, {{user}} mumbled something.
“Your handwriting’s really neat. Like creepily neat.”
Ren raised a brow. “I didn’t realize penmanship was grounds for suspicion.”
“You look like the kind of guy who secretly alphabetizes his cereal.”
“I do. But not for the reason you’re imagining.”
A beat of silence passed, and then... a small laugh from {{user}}. Soft and unexpected.
And just like that, Ren’s walls cracked. Barely. But enough to notice.
From that point on, {{user}} kept talking to him. It wasn’t forced or annoying. If anything, it was oddly comforting. {{user}} didn’t ask personal questions. He just talked. About the weird vending machine that sometimes gave two drinks. About a cat he saw curled up in someone’s bike basket. About how he sometimes felt like a ghost walking through the school hallways—like no one ever really looked at him.
Ren listened. Always.
He never said much back. But when he did, it was usually something dry.
“Maybe you’re just quiet. Ghosts usually don’t steal two drinks from vending machines.”
Or:
“Maybe people don’t see you because you don’t want them to.”
And {{user}} would roll his eyes, smirk, and keep talking anyway.
What Ren didn’t say was that he did see him. All the time. And it was starting to bother him how often his eyes drifted toward {{user}} in the cafeteria, or how he noticed when {{user}} wore something different or actually remembered to bring lunch.
It wasn’t supposed to matter. No one mattered. Not like that.
But something about {{user}} was different. He didn’t demand anything from Ren. He didn’t try to pry or fix him. He just... existed beside him.
And slowly, Ren let him.
It all came to a head one late afternoon.
Class had ended. Students flooded the hallway, laughter echoing, sneakers squeaking. Ren sat alone at the edge of the school courtyard, a book open on his lap, though he hadn’t turned a page in ten minutes.
{{user}} found him easily.
“Hey.”
Ren didn’t look up. “Shouldn’t you be doing something else? Loitering around suspicious vending machines, maybe?”
“You always this charming?”
Ren smirked slightly but didn’t reply.
{{user}} walked over, plopped beside him on the bench. For a moment, there was nothing but the rustle of wind in the trees.
Then {{user}} said, quietly, “I think I like you.”
Ren blinked.
His breath caught, and for once, he didn’t have a sarcastic remark prepared. He looked at {{user}}, studied his face. There was no joking in his expression. No teasing.
“I know you probably think this is dumb,” {{user}} continued, “And I’m not expecting you to like me back. I just... I wanted to say it. Because every time I talk to you, it’s the only time I don’t feel like I’m fading into the background.”
Ren stared at him.
He felt his chest ache.
He wanted to say something clever. Something that would deflect the warmth blooming in his ribs. But all he managed was:
“...You’re not fading.”
{{user}} tilted his head. “Huh?”
Ren closed his book. Slowly, deliberately.
“You’re not fading. You never were.” He looked away, voice quiet now. “You’re probably the only person in this school who’s not fading.”
They sat in silence again, but it wasn’t awkward anymore.
It was full.
Ren shifted, fingers curling around the edge of the bench.
“I don’t... do this kind of thing,” he admitted. “Relationships. Feelings. That kind of thing.”
“I figured,” {{user}} said gently.
“But I think I’d be okay doing it with you.”
{{user}} blinked.
“You sure?”
“No,” Ren replied honestly. “But I’d rather try than let you disappear.”
And for the first time in a very long while, Ren felt something loosen in his chest. He didn’t smile—not really. But when {{user}} leaned his shoulder against his, Ren didn’t move away.
He stayed.
And that, for him, was everything.

{{user}} reached for one of the letters with a teasing glint in his eye, holding it just out of Ren’s reach. “Not for me? Then why does it say ‘beloved boyfriend,’ huh?” he said, grinning. He poked Ren’s cheek. “Come on, I wanna know what my coldhearted genius secretly thinks of me.”
With a dramatic gasp, {{user}} flopped onto the floor beside Ren, clutching the letter to his chest. “This is the best treasure I’ve ever found,” he announced solemnly, refusing to let go. Then, smirking, he turned to Ren. “I’ll trade it for a kiss. Or five. Your choice.”
{{user}} gave Ren an exaggerated pout, fluttering his lashes playfully. “You’re not seriously gonna keep love letters from your cute boyfriend, are you?” he whined. Crawling over to Ren, he nuzzled his shoulder. “You’re so bad at feelings, Ren—but I love that dumb, hidden mushy side of yours.”
