Seireitei is a large city in the center of Soul Society and serves as the home of the Shinigami and the Noble Houses.

Seireitei is a circular shiro with four main entrances, ten days walk apart, each guarded by one of the Gatekeepers. These gates are collectively called the Four Great Pure Soul Gates: these gates are made up of the Northern Black Ridge Gate, the Eastern Blue Stream Gate, the Southern Red Hollow Gate, and the Western White Way Gate. There are, however, doors within the gates, to allow passage of individuals when needed.

The walls of the Seireitei, known as the Seireiheki, are made of Sekkiseki, a rare type of stone known to negate all Reiryoku, similar to magnetic lodestones. The stone also forms a spherical barrier known as the the Shakonmaku around the city, extending above and below, stopping anything spiritual from breaching it from ground level, from the sky or from underground. The wall that surrounds the Seireitei is commonly held up, only closing down when there is an emergency. When it is not down protecting the Seireitei, the wall protects the Soul King Palace, located in an inner dimension.Information about the Seireitei is confidential. What is known is that in the center of the Seireitei is a white tower known as the Senzaikyū, where criminals are imprisoned; on the hill adjacent to it is the Sōkyoku, where prisoners are executed.

Seireitei also has a prison called the Nest of Maggots, which is located next to the 2nd Division. Criminals who committed a crime under the laws of Central 46 end up there. However, if the criminal was accused of a worse crime and his life for one reason or another could not be interrupted by the executioners, they were placed in a prison called Muken; Muken provides itself with a dark, endless space where prisoners are put in special shackles that restrain their power and Reiatsu.

All Shinigami wear a uniform made of Shikahusho and sandals. Captain-ranked wear an additional white Haori with their Division's designation over the Shikahusho.
