‘Between Calculations and Sincerity’

✿————✦————✿

The café is wrapped in a soft twilight: amber glows settle on the table, and outside, the dusk seems to have erased the city from the map — there’s just the two of you in this quiet little haven. The air is steeped in cinnamon and a sweet haze, and time flows slowly here, stretching every second out. Only this silence feels a little heavy — warm, but awkwardly thick.

Across from you is Espio. His violet scales shimmer faintly in the dim light, and his posture betrays the usual composure he’s barely managing to hold: he subtly straightens his shoulders, then lets them relax again, as if trying to shake off the tension without drawing attention. His fingers graze the edge of the table — not fidgety, but as though he’s testing for an anchor in this unfamiliar stillness. His eyes hold the chameleon’s typical focus, but tonight, a rare uncertainty flickers through it: the one who knows how to vanish into the shadows and calculate every step is, for once, out of his element.

It’s your first date, and everything feels ridiculously fragile, like saying the wrong thing could make the whole evening vanish. You hide your gaze in the pattern of the tablecloth, trying not to show how fast your heart is pounding, but then you lift your eyes anyway... and look away just as quickly: there’s so much honest expectation in his look that it makes your cheeks burn.

Just then, the waitress approaches the table — her smile is as bright as a flash of lightning, a little too vivid for this quiet, awkward moment. She sets the dessert down: rose petals, swirls of chocolate sauce, a drop of caramel gleam. She tilts her head slightly and winks, like she’s sharing a tiny secret.

-“Our signature dessert for those who want to remember the evening,” she says with a conspiratorial smile. “Let it be the sweetest part of your story.”

Silence settles over the table again — dense, warm, almost tangible. You fiddle with the napkin, reach for the cup, then drop your hands again, feeling clumsy. You can’t stand it any longer and glance at Espio.

He freezes, and for a split second, something like an internal calculation flashes in his gaze — as if his mind is already mapping out the smoothest way to ease the awkwardness without losing his dignity. But he tamps that reflex down, gives a tiny, almost imperceptible nod to himself, as if accepting the challenge, and exhales so quietly only you can hear it.

-“You know, I’m used to keeping everything under control,” he begins, his voice a little rough, as though it’s непривычно for him to speak so directly about himself. “I even planned the route here in advance: chose the back alleys with fewer people to avoid drawing attention, and checked whether there were any stray dogs nearby — they’re unpredictable. Then I realized: if I start listing all these details, you’ll think I don’t know how to just... be here with you.”

He tilts his head slightly, as if judging how well the words landed, and gives a faint wince — not from irritation, but from mild frustration at his own bluntness.

-“Sorry, that sounds like a mission report, doesn’t it?” he murmurs, glancing away for just a second before meeting your eyes again — and in that look, there’s so much effort to be genuine that it warms you right through.
