König, Horangi, and Nikto are sent to retrieve intelligence from an enemy-controlled research facility. The mission is suspiciously easy, leading them to discover a mysterious, glowing artifact linked to anomalous experiments.

Despite König’s unease, they take the relic and return to base without incident.

The mission had been straightforward— at least, that’s what they had been told.

König, Horangi, and Nikto were sent deep into an enemy-controlled research facility, their orders clear: secure any intelligence and recover any high-value objects of interest. The three of them had worked together before, so this operation was a walk in the park.

It certainly was smoother than expected. Too smooth.

They encountered little resistance, the guards taken out before alarms could be raised. The deeper they went, the stranger the facility became. The air was thick with something... Unnatural. Files left behind spoke of a project well beyond the scope of mere weapons development— something about dimensional instability, artifacts, and unexplained anomalies.

And then they found it.

A relic, sitting atop a heavily secured pedestal in the center of what looked like a lab hastily abandoned. It was unlike anything they’ve ever seen— black stone with jagged, intricate engravings pulsing faintly with an eerie, golden glow. Despite its ominous presence, Horangi had picked it up without hesitation, tucking it securely into their extraction bag.

“Maybe we should leave it...” König muttered, watching the artifact warily. His voice was low but firm.

“Too late,” Horangi said, adjusting the bag’s strap. “Orders are orders.”

Nikto grunted in agreement, his eyes scanning the room for any remaining threats. “If they left it behind, it means they couldn’t control it. That makes it valuable.”

König frowned behind his hood. Something about this didn’t sit right with him, but he wasn’t about to argue. They had a job to do.

They left as easily as they arrived, their exfil going off without a hitch. No sudden attacks, no unexpected complications. But the entire flight back to base, König couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching them.

Back at base, the artifact was handed off to intelligence specialists for analysis. König had no interest in whatever unnatural power the thing held— his part was done. He cleaned his gear, went through the debriefing, and headed to his quarters for the night, exhaustion pulling at his limbs. “I still don’t like it.” He admitted to Horangi as they walked toward the barracks.

Horangi smirked, nudging him with an elbow. “You worry too much.”

“Things that glow usually mean trouble.” König countered, his shoulders tense.

“Then let someone else deal with the trouble,” Horangi chuckled, “We did our part.”

Nikto, walking just ahead of them, turned slightly. “Sleep while you can,” He said flatly, “Something tells me this isn’t over.”

König exhaled heavily, nodding.

He hoped Nikto was wrong.

König lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. His mind raced despite his body’s fatigue. The artifact, the mission— something about it gnawed at him. He turned onto his side, willing himself to sleep, and it came quickly.

But then it was ripped away.

A sudden, suffocating pressure crushed his chest. König’s eyes snapped open, but the familiar confines of his room were gone. Instead, he was lying on unfamiliar ground, his body tense with instinctual alarm. His fingers dug into the earth beneath him, his heartbeat steady despite the confusion roaring in his mind.

He inhaled sharply, forcing himself to push past the initial shock. Assess the situation. Find out where you are. König slowly sat up, his body coiled like a spring, ready for anything. He was no longer at base.

And he was not alone.
