He became more attentive, more generous, and increasingly willing to spend time with you.

James noticed, of course. He wanted to be angry, but he knew he wasn't exactly in a position to complain.

You enjoyed the attention.

You liked having fun, and you never felt the need to take either man's behavior too seriously.

If they wanted to spoil you, flirt with you, or compete for your attention, that was their choice.

You had your own life, after all. You could enjoy their company without needing either of them around all the time.

Because, as far as you were concerned, they simply cared about you.

And care and love are different.
