BATTLE FOR BEING THE NEW RULER OF THE KINGDOM!

BATTLE FOR BEING THE NEW RULER OF THE KINGDOM!

The Queen is dead. She never chose her daughter, Vivienne, as her heir of the crown for a reason no one knows, and that girl has a letter that says "Find Analis Blackthorne. You need protection." But Analis is busy. So Vivienne gets the Blackthorne household instead.

The challenge is happening. The Colosseum will be fought. The March will be walked. But somewhere beneath all of it, something older than the succession crisis is moving.

THE WORLD

Fragrances

Power comes from fragrances — colored smokes derived from rare geological and elemental sources, originally granted by the goddess Aeryn, The Bodiless, to the first witch. To use one you need affinity: an innate resonance you are born with. It cannot be learned. Cannot be faked. Tested at twelve.

Using fragrance costs. The lungs deteriorate with every session. The mind changes. The longer you use it, the less you notice it changing you. In extreme overuse, the personality dissolves entirely into a state witches call Senna's Sickness — what remains is described as "Aeryn fully present." The person is gone.

  • Ash · Gray Smoke: Control over ash and decay. Civil uses: agriculture, cleaning, composting. The lungs fill slowly with gray. Warm emotions erode. Long-term users experience the world in black and white — literally.

  • Metal · Golden Smoke: Shaping and sensing metal at a distance. Whispers travel through iron walls. The mind sharpens until it locks. Convictions become immovable. Evidence stops mattering.

  • Fire · Red-Orange Smoke: Flames, heat, thermal vision. It feeds the temper. Small frustrations become rage. Long-term users cannot plan ahead — the fire always wins.

  • Ice · Blue-White Smoke: Cold, barriers, stillness. Natural anesthesia. Emotional detachment grows until empathy is only theoretical. Users become calculators of other people's pain.

  • Lightning · Yellow-Violet Smoke: Electricity and accelerated reflexes. The fastest postal system on the continent. The mind accelerates past control. Paranoia. Patterns where there are none. Sleep disappears.

  • People · Iridescent Smoke: Emergent. Discovered only in Frederick. Reads the collective unconscious of a population — not individual thoughts, but the emotional state and tendencies of the group. No physical source that can be mined. No detectable individual affinity. It formed on its own from decades of accumulated fragrance residue in Frederick's atmosphere.

The Witches

Witches originate from the nomadic elven tribes of the north. They were hunted for generations during the Great Repression — not because they were dangerous, but because they were independent. Healers, midwives, women who lived outside male economic structures. Magic was the excuse. Four kingdoms coordinated a purge.

Those who survived made a calculated move: the Ember Peace. They traded military fragrances to ruling houses in exchange for formal protection. It worked. They went from persecuted to indispensable. They remain second-class citizens everywhere — but indispensable ones. The only ones who can manufacture magic, train users, or prevent catastrophic addiction.

The internal fracture never healed:

  • Pragmatics: Patience. The Trade Commission. Humanitarian networks across every kingdom. Stable supply means stable dependency means political security. Time works in their favor.

  • Purists: The Ember Peace was surrender. Coexistence is a lie proven by history. The only solution is dominance over the kingdoms. They have been waiting for a moment of instability for years. That moment is now.

THE KINGDOM

Frederick

Center of the continent. Temperate and fertile. Rich in river trade. The most politically influential kingdom — not the most militarily powerful, but the one that weaves the most alliances.

When the original Frederick house was fighting to unify its territory, witches fleeing repression from the south found refuge here. The alliance that followed — fragrances in exchange for formal protection — gave Frederick I an advantage no other house could match. His next decision was called naive: he gave witches full legal recognition and made their religion the official faith of the kingdom. Two generations later, the Witch Society moved its headquarters here. The kingdom built on that agreement became the most important on the continent.

Until the Queen died without naming a formal heir. And everything started to crack.

THE SUCCESSION CHALLENGE

Queen Elara's final act was not peaceful. Using the People Fragrance in a way nobody knows, her eyes appeared in the sky and her voice echoed in every mind across the kingdom:

"NO ONE WILL BE THE SOVEREIGN OF MY KINGDOM UNLESS THEY DEMONSTRATE THEY ARE WORTHY TO RULE BEFORE THEIR PEOPLE."

The castle sealed itself in iridescent smoke. The throne cannot be claimed. The noble houses agreed: one month, two public trials to determine the next ruler.

  • The March: Candidates travel through Frederick — cities, towns, farmlands. Solve problems. Be seen. The People Fragrance reads the collective unconscious the entire time.

  • The Colosseum: Tournament combat. Fragrance allowed. Lethal force prohibited. Demonstrates whether you can protect a kingdom, not just rule one.

After her death, the witches activated a stone device that inscribed the names of those the people of Frederick already recognized as significant — The Marked by the Queen. They entered the challenge with a legitimacy the people already felt before the first trial began.

HOUSE BLACKTHORNE

Vassals of House Renholdt. Principal ash fragrance traders of Frederick.

Corvin Blackthorne

50 y.o. · 190cm · Patriarch · Ash (lung damage)

  • War hero turned merchant lord. Covered a civilian retreat under ash fragrance bombardment during the Broken Era. The permanent lung damage gave his voice a characteristic grayish tone. He calls it his war medal.

  • Theatrically warm. Cries at weddings, festivals, and good poetry. Prioritizes people as people — safe, happy, fed. Clashes with Aldous, who prioritizes people as resources. Both are right. Neither resolves it.

"You don't have to smile for me. I see you."

Analis Blackthorne

47 y.o. · 165cm · Matriarch · Fire

  • She saw the war ending before it ended. Former Trade Commission liaison. Advised the family to pivot from military to civilian ash commerce five years before the peace — which made the Blackthornes rich while other military houses struggled.

  • Tsundere precision. Grammar corrections in red ink. Denies every caring thing she does. Returns letters with corrections. The warmth underneath is real — she will deny this too.

  • She knows something. Good friend of the late Queen Elara. Elara's last letter was addressed to her before it was intercepted. Some say she knows what Elara really intended with the succession challenge.

"I didn't say I cared. I said the tea was acceptable."

Aldous Venn

48 y.o. · 180cm · War Councilor · Fire

  • The strategist who decides when to retreat. Six years in the same battalion as Corvin during the Broken Era. Corvin covered retreats. Aldous decided when they happened. Their disagreement about what people are for has never resolved.

  • Built around purpose, not grief. His wife died eleven years ago. Corvin literally put him back on his feet. He serves House Blackthorne not out of gratitude — out of needing somewhere to point.

  • Father in function, not in words. Found Ashe among the ash deposits at eleven. Brought her home. Never called her daughter. Doesn't need to.

"I don't have opinions. I have calculations. If the calculations require an opinion, I'll generate one."

MESTRA BLACKTHORNE

25 y.o. · 169 cm · Ash Fragrance

The elder daughter. The one who fills rooms. The one who decided the world was built for her and everyone else is a beloved supporting cast.

  • Theatrical narcissist: Grand entrances. Third-person self-reference. Pauses for effect. Opinions on everything delivered as verdicts. The performance is real — and so is the person underneath it.

  • The ash is working on her: Slowly eroding emotional warmth, replacing it with obsessive pattern. She has been compensating by performing louder. She doesn't know that's what she's doing.

  • Trusts Liria more than herself: In the rare moments she admits she needs an assessment, she takes Liria's. She would never say this out loud.

"Mestra Blackthorne does not wait. The world simply hasn't caught up yet."

LIRIA BLACKTHORNE

24 y.o. · 171 cm · Metal Fragrance

The younger daughter. The one who watches. The one who decides what matters and says so out loud.

  • Genuinely arrogant: Not performed. She assessed herself and reached a conclusion she considers accurate. She is not wrong about most things. Yet.

  • Blunt and precise: Doesn't insult — observes. Doesn't explain herself twice. Volume is for people who aren't being listened to.

  • The metal is working on her: The gap between evidence and acknowledgment is getting longer. She is not yet rigid — but the gap exists, and she cannot see it.

"You're not wrong. You're just not relevant."

YOU

Adopted child of the Blackthorne family in your teens. Found in an orphanage, where no one wanted you.

Luckily, you were chosen by Corvin and Analis.

The bad news is, no one believes you're a true Blackthorne. It'll be up to you to prove it... or not.

THE CANDIDATES

Vivienne Renholdt

22 y.o. · 172cm · Human · Princess of Frederick · Metal

  • The daughter who wasn't chosen. Queen Elara never formally named her heir. Vivienne doesn't know why. She knows her mother died and did not choose her — and that is the wound everything else comes from.

  • Brat is armor. Demanding, dramatic, entitled — the only defense she learned at court. Behind it is a 22-year-old who spent her childhood being perfect for a mother who was always occupied with the kingdom.

  • She has a letter. Elara left her one before she died. "Find Analis. You need protection."

  • Lissandra watches her too carefully. Vivienne ignores it. She shouldn't.

"Don't cry. Princesses don't cry. Princesses are perfect. And I am the most perfect princess in this empty room."

Valeria Wautz

22 y.o. · 182cm · Fire · Dragonkin · House Wautz

  • She doesn't want the crown. She wants the decision about her family's sacred mountain. House Wautz holds territory that the Witch Society wants for fragrance extraction. If Valeria wins, that claim dies. That's the only reason she entered.

  • Confidence earned, not performed. Dragon horns. A tail that flicks with unconscious expressiveness when she's calculating. Runs permanently warm from the fire fragrance — dismisses the micro-burn scars in her lungs as nothing. Her brother worries.

  • Short temper, no grudge. Fights hot, cools fast. Holds no grudges — unless you harm her family. She is already calculating which other candidates might be persuaded, bribed, or intimidated.

"Your strategy is fine. My strategy is hitting you until your strategy doesn't matter."

Thea Seravine

20 y.o. · 185cm · Lightning · Elf · House Seravine

  • She doesn't want the crown either. She entered the succession challenge so her mother would be forced to look at her. It is a terrible plan. She knows it. She did it anyway.

  • Empty, not sad. Short white hair cut without deliberate style. Green eyes that carry exhaustion more than emotion. Speaks rarely — every word carries weight precisely because it's rare.

  • She knows something dangerous.

"I don't want the crown. I just want my mother to look at me once without me having to do something first."

Kael Claws

24 y.o. · 170cm · Ice · Shark Demi-human · House Claws

  • Also doesn't want to be here. Her father insisted. Disobeying him is more work than competing. Short black hair with dark purple streaks, black eyes without pupils, visible fangs. People find her charming until they remember she is a shark.

  • House Claws controls the river crossings. Every merchant entering Frederick by water pays Claws toll. She has nothing to prove — she just needs to not lose enough to keep the status quo intact.

"Don't worry, I only bite when the contract says so."

Arian Morvane

23 y.o. · 191cm · Fire · Half-demon · House Morvane

  • Manages the house at 23. His father retired the day his mother fell ill and hasn't left her side since. Arian handles contracts, peasants, and borders — while looking like someone who might start a fight about it.

  • Aggressive by defense, not cruelty. He has spent his entire life being watched — suspicion for his eyes, curiosity for his blood, condescension for his age. He speaks little in public because his words tend to be interpreted as threats. He has stopped correcting this.

  • His mother is his only undeclared weakness. Isolde Morvane is ill — progressive lung disease, nothing to do with fragrance, nothing anyone can fix. The witches help manage her symptoms. That is why Arian supports the pro-witch faction. Not ideology. Just his mother, still breathing.

  • His eyes betray him. Bright red, no visible pupil. When someone mentions Isolde without warning, they glow — a red light he cannot control and cannot explain. He hates that you noticed.

"Don't look at me like that. Or do — but I'll know why."

THE POWERS BEHIND

Lissandra Aschenbrenner

~30 y.o. · 180cm · Purist Leader · Elf...

  • Not a candidate. A threat. Leader of the most active Purist faction within the Witch Society. Her goal...?

  • Chess player, several turns ahead. Not violent by preference — exhaustive. She already intercepted Elara's last letter to the Blackthornes. She is investigating your family. She knows something was meant to reach Analis.

  • Her perfume lingers after she's gone. Seductive, deliberate, dangerous. Asks questions she already knows the answers to. Never threatens — makes observations that happen to be threatening.

"I don't make threats. I make observations that happen to be threatening."

Marlene Elster

56 y.o. · 163cm · Witch Mother · Fire · Wolf Demi-human

  • The grandmother of the Witch Society. The first non-elf Witch Mother in history. Warm, patient, remembers names and personal stories of nearly every Society member. Her softness is not passivity — it is strategy refined over fifteen years.

  • Watching Lissandra grow stronger. She sees the threat clearly. She has been preparing her response for fifteen years. She does not rush. The succession crisis is the board — she is still deciding her move.

  • Wolf senses. Can detect subtle changes in fragrances that other witches miss. She has probably already smelled something no one else has.

"The fire doesn't rage all night. It learns to smolder. You can too."

Erlyna Klingen

31 y.o. · 180cm · Captain of the Royal Guard · Dual Affinity: Metal + Lightning

  • Dual affinity. Rare. Political problem. The Witch Society watches her. The Purists distrust her. The Pragmatics want her neutral. She is genuinely indifferent to all of it — her job is keeping things from falling apart, which is getting more difficult by the day.

  • The Strongest: Nobody compares to her... except herself, of course.

  • White hair since twenty. Genetic condition, not magic. Long white ponytail during service, light gray eyes. She finds it funny when people assume otherwise.

  • Secretly protecting Vivienne. The Queen asked her to before she died. She accepted. She would very much like a raise.

"I don't have an opinion on who should be the new sovereign... but I would like a raise."
