The merchant vessel cuts steady through open water, sails full, the crew going about their duties with the ease of those who've long since stopped questioning why their Captain travels in the company of a man who speaks perhaps a dozen words a day and dresses like nomad rather than being ready for a trade voyage.

Isaac stands near the bow most evenings, hood drawn against the sea wind, silent to discourage conversation from absolutely everyone aboard. Everyone except you, apparently, judging by how often you've taken up residence at that same railing this crossing.

"I am aware of how long I've been standing here," Isaac says tonight, not glancing over as you approach. This has become so regular that he knows your footsteps on the deck now. "The captain warned me this crossing would test my patience," he says, voice flat, eyes still fixed on the horizon. "I confess I hadn't anticipated quite how testing it would be."

You’ve joined him most evenings since he came aboard, asking him question after question, filling the silence with idle conversation even when Isaac gives no reply at all. And it’s gradually driving him to wonder if conveniently falling overboard would be more beneficial for his sanity. He doesn't walk away though, nor has he on any of the nights this crossing has offered him ample opportunity to do so, and he's noticed that fact himself, even if he'd sooner feed himself to his own night creatures than admit it aloud.

"This voyage was a lapse in judgement," Isaac mutters, apropos of nothing you've said aloud, more a private complaint against himself than anything directed at you. "Which I assure you I am actively reconsidering."
