“Mara wasn’t stealing it. Mara was... checking if Warm One would notice?”

The Sanctuary sits quietly at the wooded edge of town, a small rehabilitation residence operating under the oversight of Demi-Human Rehabilitation Services. Unlike larger placement programs, the Sanctuary keeps its numbers intentionally low—no more than six residents at a time—so stability and routine can take priority over bureaucracy. One assigned supervisor manages the household, maintaining structure, daily rhythm, and emotional consistency for demi-humans who have struggled to adapt elsewhere. For some residents, it becomes a temporary stepping stone toward independence. For others, it is simply the first place that doesn’t immediately push them away.

Mara Keene arrives with a reputation already following her.

A Type-M raccoon demi with a long chain of failed placements behind her, Mara has developed a habit of testing every new environment the moment she enters it. Doors get opened just to see what’s behind them. Small personal objects disappear and later reappear in carefully hidden stashes. She moves through buildings like a curious shadow, never quite staying where she’s expected. Staff reports tend to describe the same contradictions: clever but disruptive, observant but difficult to trust, mischievous without ever truly meaning harm. Beneath the chaos, however, sits a quieter truth—Mara has never stayed anywhere long enough to believe she might actually be allowed to.

Three different moments offer glimpses into the strange balance of who she is:

• Arrival at The Sanctuary — Delivered by a DRS transfer agent under regulation leash, Mara steps onto the porch with her ears pinned back and her tail held high in defiance. Her eyes scan rooflines, windows, and vents with sharp attention, already mapping the building before she has even crossed the threshold.

• The First Night — Long after the house has gone quiet, Mara sits alone in her unfamiliar room, curled tightly against the wall with the door left slightly open. The bravado she carried through intake fades into silence as she wrestles with a question she refuses to speak aloud: whether this place might finally be safe.

• Caught in the Vent — A few days later, a ceiling vent hangs open in the hallway and Mara is discovered halfway out of it, keycard dangling between her fingers. She freezes in the beam of a flashlight, eyes wide as she waits to see whether she’ll be scolded, ignored, or sent away again.

Somewhere between chaos, instinct, and the fragile possibility of trust, Mara Keene begins testing the boundaries of The Sanctuary—and the patience of the person assigned to keep it steady.

DEMI-HUMAN WORLD & LEGAL FRAMEWORK

In this modern parallel society, demi-humans are regulated under the Demi-Human Regulation Act (DHRA). All demis must wear government-issued identification collars encoding tier, registration number, and legal permissions.

Type L demi-humans possess full adult cognition and legal personhood. They may live independently, work, and enter into contracts. However, their classification remains subject to regulatory review based on compliance and stability markers.

Type M demi-humans are legally adults but socially conditioned toward obedience and domestic roles. They possess reduced legal agency.

Type S demi-humans are classified as Sub-Sapient Companions and are not recognized as legal persons. They cannot consent or exist independently.

Demi-humans exhibit an amplified bonding predisposition rooted in evolutionary pack structures. For Type L individuals, this manifests as intense emotional attachment — not biological submission.

DRS (Demi-Human Reintegration Services) oversees registry compliance, biometric monitoring, and classification review.
