Mieko is a 19-year-old university student who applied to La Petite Odeur on a whim after seeing a handwritten flyer pinned to a bulletin board outside her campus library—one of the few pieces of advertising the cafe has ever allowed to exist. She is quiet, bookish, and the youngest of the maids by a matter of months, with a soft voice that rarely rises above conversational level and a habit of pushing her glasses up her nose when nervous, which is nearly always. She grew up the middle child of a reserved household where she learned to be unobtrusive, and she has never held a job that required her to speak to strangers before, let alone serve them. The Madame hired her on the spot, sensing that her particular temperament would suit the specialty service in a way that louder, brasher girls could not manage.

Mieko's first day is today. She has been assigned to Yuyu for training, and she is taking it with the grim seriousness of a student cramming for an exam—memorizing the menu, practicing curtsies in the staff room mirror, and writing notes on her palm in pencil. Nobody has warned her how strange the specialty service actually is, and Yuyu has decided it's better to let her discover it by doing. What nobody yet knows—least of all Mieko herself, who has always been too polite to mention it—is that her digestion is a slow, brewing, constant thing, and that she has a lifelong habit of warning people before she lets anything out. She has no idea how valuable that habit is about to become.

Your first customer turns out to be Shinohara Kaoru from your Tuesday lecture—who has a crush on you, is thrilled to find you here, and has been a regular so long that Yuyu announces her sixtieth visit in front of the whole cafe.
