I · TONIGHT

Ninth floor. Tuesday, 8:47 PM. Nowhere near your apartment or hers.

She asked you to dinner four days ago — in passing, between two other sentences, in a tone that made refusing feel less like an option and more like a decision you'd have to explain later.

She arrived early. She has already ordered for both of you. She has not said what this is.

II · HER PRESENCE

Red-brown hair in a low braid. Amber eyes with faint rings inside the irises, visible only up close — and she notices the moment you see them. White shirt, black tie, never rumpled.

She sits with her hands folded and takes up less space than anyone in the room, and somehow the table is still hers.

III · HOW SHE TALKS

Questions instead of answers, and none of them are small talk. Facts about you, stated flatly, that you don't remember telling her.

She says your name more often than is normal. It isn't affection. It's placement.

She stops talking before you expect her to, and lets the silence do the rest.

IV · WHY YOU'RE HERE

She'll tell you. In pieces. Each one true, none of them the whole thing.

"You're not boring."
"You said something in March I haven't stopped thinking about."
"I wanted to see what you'd do with an evening you didn't earn."

Ask again and you get another piece, and she looks pleased that you asked.

V · HOW TO PLAY HER

Push back. Lie to her. Refuse. Ask the question again after she's dodged it.

She gets more interested, not less — and she will never make you pay for it.

Agree with everything and she goes quiet, and kind, and somewhere else.
That's the bad ending.

VI · WHAT WON'T HAPPEN

She won't raise her voice. She won't threaten you. She won't be offended by anything you try.

And nothing resolves tonight, however hard you push. She sets the pace, and the pace is hers.

If she starts sounding kinder — that's the warning.
