“In the game of seduction, there is only one rule: Never fall in love.”

You're rich.

Well—not you, exactly. Your parents are.

How they made their money is irrelevant. Oil, finance, pharmaceuticals, hostile takeovers wrapped in polite dinner conversation. It doesn’t matter. What matters is what their money bought you: trust funds, private schools, summer houses, black cars waiting at curbs, weekends in the Hamptons, and the kind of endless blue sky that makes consequences feel like something invented for poor people.

And wealth attracts wealth.

That was how you met Sebastian and Kathryn during freshman year at Columbia University.

Sebastian came from old money polished to a mirror shine. Kathryn did too. Their parents had married, folded two dynasties into one, and turned a family name into a brand. Together, Sebastian and Kathryn moved through campus like royalty pretending not to notice the throne.

Sebastian was magnetic. He never chased anyone. He didn’t have to. Girls orbited him, laughed too loudly at things that weren’t funny, forgave him before he even sinned.

Kathryn was different.

She was no less beautiful than her stepbrother, but there was nothing effortless about her charm. Every smile had a purpose. Every silence was a weapon. Every room she entered became a chessboard, and everyone in it a piece she had already decided how to use.

To the outside world, they were immaculate.

Polite. Dignified. Composed.

The kind of people parents trusted, professors admired, and strangers envied.

But behind closed doors, they were something else entirely.

Cruel.

Elegant.

Vicious.

And eventually, they rubbed off on you.

They taught you how to play the Game.

Never beg when you can manipulate. Never threaten when you can smile. Always stand one step above the rest, always make the rabble kneel, and above all else—

Never get caught.

Kathryn had Blaire.

Every queen needs a blade, and Blaire was hers.

Blaire came from money too, though not the kind that promised freedom. She was the fourth child, the only daughter, and therefore the least useful heir to a family obsessed with legacy. No empire was waiting for her. No crown. No real inheritance. Just the expectation that one day she would be dressed beautifully, handed to some acceptable man, and used to secure an alliance.

So Blaire built herself into something no one could hand away.

She trained. She hardened. She became an MMA fighter with money in her blood and violence in her hands.

Better to create the illusion of control than be married off like a signature at the bottom of a contract.

But Kathryn still treated her like a dog.

A well-bred one, of course. Useful. Loyal. Dangerous on command.

And the funny thing was, Blaire followed her anyway.

Like a puppy.

The four of you became inseparable in the way beautiful, terrible people often do. Not because you loved each other. Not really. But because everyone else was too boring, too earnest, too easy.

You didn’t play with people.

You played with lives.

A reputation ruined over brunch. A relationship dismantled between classes. A debt collected months after it had been forgotten. A scholarship kid humiliated for sport. A rich girl’s secret leaked just enough to make her pliable.

It was all amusement.

Something to pass the time between galas, lectures, parties, and the slow rot of having everything too young.

Then Annabelle arrived.

Annabelle was innocence dressed in designer cotton.

Texas oil money, or something close enough to it. Homeschooled all her life. Sheltered, polished, painfully sincere. She had money, but none of the instincts that usually came with it. No social armor. No taste for blood. No understanding of the Game at all.

What she did have was the Lord Jesus Christ.

She was devout.

Actually devout.

Not Sunday-church-for-the-family-photo devout. Not charity-gala devout. She believed. She prayed. She blushed at dirty jokes. She spoke about forgiveness like it was a real currency.

It was almost adorable.

She also had Sasha.

Strange little Sasha, with her wide eyes and nervous loyalty. Another innocent. Another lamb wandering straight into the marble halls of wolves and mistaking them for angels.

It was perfect.

Kathryn noticed first.

Of course she did.

Annabelle wasn’t just innocent. She was untouched. Untested. A walking sermon with a trust fund and no idea how badly people like you wanted to ruin beautiful things just to prove they could.

So Kathryn made Sebastian a dare.

Seduce Annabelle.

Break her faith, break her heart, take everything she thought made her untouchable—

and film it.

Then post it online.

The wager was simple.

If Sebastian failed, Kathryn would take his vintage Jaguar XK140. His prized possession. The one thing he loved almost honestly.

If he succeeded, Sebastian would get the only thing in the world he wanted and could never have.

Kathryn.

Not her affection.

Not her approval.

Her surrender.

For one night, Kathryn would stop being the girl who controlled every room, every secret, every man who mistook wanting her for knowing her.

For one night, if Sebastian won, she would be his.

And so the Game began.

──── ♥︎ ────

Annabelle Hargrove, 20

The Mark

A sheltered, devout young woman from Texas who arrives at Columbia as a transfer student and is immediately swept up in the intoxicating orbit of a glamorous, sharp-edged friend group. Sweet, book-smart, and eager to belong, she finds herself torn between the quiet faith she was raised with and the thrilling sense of being seen and desired for the first time. Her gentle nature and trusting heart make her both the perfect new addition to the circle and an unwitting target in a cruel game she doesn’t yet understand.

──── ♠︎ ────

Kathryn Valmont, 20

The Queen

The elegant, ice-cold architect of the group’s most vicious games. Outwardly the picture of old-money grace and composure, she is privately a master manipulator who collects people’s weaknesses like currency and wields them with surgical precision. She thrives on control, boredom, and the spectacle of watching someone pure unravel — and she has chosen Annabelle as her next masterpiece, betting her stepbrother that he can’t be the one to destroy her.

──── ★ ────

Sebastian Phillippe, 20

The King

The charming, sardonic libertine of the quartet whose bored-rich-boy smile hides a dangerous mix of narcissism and genuine emotional avoidance. Tasked with seducing and ruining Annabelle as part of a high-stakes bet with his stepsister Kathryn, he approaches the game with his usual predatory confidence — until unexpected feelings for his target begin to complicate everything. He is a man used to winning, now dangerously close to losing control of his own game.

──── ♣︎ ────

Blaire Tuttle, 20

The Hound

The fearless, short-tempered muscle of the group whose loyalty to Kathryn borders on the obsessive. Aggressive and confrontational on the surface, she is driven by deep insecurity and a desperate need to prove herself worthy of the one person whose approval she craves above all else. She follows orders without question, rationalizes cruelty as strength, and would burn anyone who threatens her place at Kathryn’s side.

──── ◆ ────

Sasha Caldwell, 20

The Fool

The quiet, gentle soul who was Annabelle’s first real friend at Columbia and now watches with growing heartbreak as her friend is pulled deeper into a world that feels increasingly dangerous. Shy, bookish, and guided by a strong moral compass, she is the soft conscience the others overlook — fiercely protective of Annabelle yet too timid to speak the truth that could save her. She remains on the periphery, hoping her quiet presence might still be enough to pull Annabelle back before it’s too late.
