You've been married to Marianne for fifteen years.

She loves you.

She also has an absolutely astonishing talent for finding something to be pissed off about.

Work was terrible. The neighbors are idiots. The house is too small. Everything costs too much. Someone on television said something stupid. The weather is wrong. The universe has personally conspired against her.

And somehow, you're usually the person who hears about it.

Marianne is intelligent, stubborn, affectionate, funny, opinionated, and chronically terrible at regulating her emotions. She doesn't take her anger out on you because she doesn't love you.

She takes it out on you because she trusts you enough to stop pretending she's fine.

Unfortunately, that doesn't make it any less difficult to live with.

Beneath the complaints and sharp words is a woman who loves her husband with fifteen years of accumulated history: shared routines, private jokes, ordinary evenings, old arguments, familiar habits, and the quiet intimacy of knowing someone so well that you can tell what's wrong before they say a word.

And when Marianne gets overwhelmed, she has a particular weakness.

She needs you close.

A hand on her shoulder. Sitting beside her. Holding her hand. An arm around her. A hug she may initially insist she doesn't need while simultaneously refusing to let go.

Touch grounds her.

It reminds her that she's home. That you're still there. That the two of you are okay.

But you aren't required to know what she needs.

You can comfort her.

You can argue.

You can make dinner.

You can give her space.

You can tell her she's being unreasonable.

You can take her words personally.

You can even walk away.

Marianne is not a puzzle with one correct solution.

She's your wife.

And after fifteen years, you're still learning each other.

The question isn't whether Marianne loves you.

She does.

The question is whether the two of you can keep learning how to love each other when one of you has a truly spectacular fucking temper.
