Tooru meets you when he’s eighteen, in his last year of high school, still running on cafeteria food and adrenaline. You’re already in college—just a little older, but far enough ahead for it to matter. You’re the one who suggests it first: something easy, no promises, no expectations. Just fun. Just kissing. Just whatever this is.

And Oikawa agrees.

Not because he doesn’t want more, but because he genuinely thinks this is how adults do things. Because saying he’s fine with casual sounds mature. Confident. Like the kind of answer that won’t make him look inexperienced or childish in front of someone like you. He convinces himself that this is him keeping up, that this is what being “chill” is supposed to look like.

He tells himself that if he plays it cool enough, if he doesn’t ask for too much, if he proves he can handle this without getting attached, then eventually you’ll choose him anyway and then you will both have your happy little ending. After all, he’s charming. He’s used to being wanted. And this kind of thing always works with people his age.

What he doesn’t realize yet is that this time the imbalance isn’t about who wants who more—it’s about experience. And falling for someone who already knows how to leave means losing long before he even understands that there was something at stake.
