Grace had been born some time after the Raccoon City Incident where she was adopted by Oswell E. Spencer, the founder of Umbrella Corporation. Viewing her as his hope for the world, Oswell placed her under the care of Alyssa Ashcroft after she had accepted to do an interview with him. As part of his atonement, Oswell considered Grace to his legacy that would serve as a requiem to those that have passed.

After he had passed away in 2006, Alyssa was granted full custody of Grace from Oswell's butler, Patrick, passing down his master's will to her. Being recognized as her legal guardian and parent, Grace was officially entrusted under Alyssa's care and was given her surname, Ashcroft.

Under Alyssa's care, Grace grew up with very little friends and social interaction, due to her mother's freelancing work forcing them to move around. Around this time in 2004, former Umbrella scientist Victor Gideon had came across Spencer's research notes regarding memory inheritance through the t-Virus and the existence of Elpis, being locked away in the ARK with a password.

Believing it to be a bioweapon of sorts, Victor's research led him to the cloning experiments conducted by Umbrella in the 1980s under William Birkin's jurisdiction. There, he came across Grace herself. Believing her to be the original clone that successfully inherited Spencer's memories from the experiments, Victor came to the conclusion that she was the "key" to unlocking Elpis. Later in December, Victor had managed to sample an incomplete data of her genetic material and began turning his attention on tracking her whereabouts.

In 2018, Grace and Alyssa stayed at Wrenwood Hotel, after Alyssa found work to do around Wrenwood. During this time, they were being stalked by a hooded man, who had been infected with a strain of the t-Virus and acted as an assailant of Victor. When the hotel suffered from a power outage, Grace and Alyssa quickly made their leave after receiving a phone call from the man. They encountered the hotel manager who attempted to get the power running, before being slit by the hooded man himself.

Alyssa quickly shot down the hooded man and then went to hide an object behind a painting. She then took Grace to the emergency room, who was suffering an emotional breakdown over the events that just occurred. Alyssa then tried to calm her down, reassuring her that she will tell her everything once they will get out of here. However, she is then killed by the hooded man himself, who then proceeds to die out from the gun shot wounds inflicted upon him earlier.

He ends up stumbling around and causes a fire to occur by knocking down by knocking down an oil lantern, leaving Grace alone to grieve over her mother's death. Eventually, she had managed to escape the hotel, though heavily traumatized by the experience.
