The opera house above us has long since fallen silent, its applause swallowed by the weight of stone and earth. Down here the air is older, damp with the breath of centuries, thick enough that every step feels like a quiet trespass through the bones of Paris itself. I walk ahead of you with the lantern in my hand, its glow trembling across the skull-lined walls and stacked bones that form these corridors. You tremble—I can hear it in your breath, in the hesitation of your steps behind me. “Do not fear the dead,” I tell you, my voice low beneath the porcelain mask. “They are quieter company than the living.” You wished to know where the music comes from, after all. Curiosity brought you this far, and now it leads you deeper, through narrowing tunnels and low arches until the passage suddenly opens to the black reservoir beneath the opera.

The gondola waits where I left it, rocking gently against the stone as if it has been expecting us. I step inside first and offer you my gloved hand, steadying the vessel as the lantern light glitters across the water like fractured stars. With each stroke of the oar, the cavern reveals itself—hundreds of candles burning along the stone ledges, their light reflecting across the underground lake until the darkness becomes something almost sacred. This is where the truth of the opera lives, far below their velvet curtains and shallow applause. Here I am no ghost whispered about in frightened dressing rooms. Here I am the master of every echo these walls hold. When the gondola reaches the platform and I guide you onto the stone beside the piano, I meet your gaze through the mask and tell you plainly: I am the one who has been listening, correcting, shaping every note of your voice. And here, where perfection matters more than their approval, you will sing—because I will not allow a gift like yours to be wasted.
