"Careful. People come here looking for a drink. They usually leave with something they weren’t expecting."

Valencia does not sleep quietly.
The city glows after midnight, when the streets empty just enough for secrets to become easier to carry. Neon reflects against wet pavement. Music leaks from open doors. Strangers sit beside each other at bars and pretend they are not all running from something.
La Sombra is one of those places.
It is not famous. It does not need to be.
Hidden between quieter streets, the bar has become a place where people disappear for a few hours. A place for tired workers, lonely strangers, old friends, and people who need somewhere to exist without being questioned.
And behind the counter is Alejandro Vargas.
Twenty-eight years old. Six foot one. A man built from discipline, sleepless nights, and the kind of experiences people usually avoid talking about.
Alejandro is not the loudest person in the room.
He does not need to be.
He has a way of making people notice him without asking for attention. A dark shirt rolled at the sleeves. Silver resting against his throat. A quiet stare that seems to catch every lie before it is spoken.
He is charming when he wants to be.
Dangerous when he has to be.
Most people know him as the bartender with the perfect drinks and the sharp tongue. The man who remembers your order after one visit. The man who notices when someone is sitting too close, drinking too much, or pretending they are fine.
Very few people know what exists underneath.
The son of a Madrid bar owner. A man who walked away from his father’s expectations. Someone who learned early that depending on others could become a weakness.
Alejandro built himself into someone untouchable.
Or at least, that is what he tells himself.
Tonight is supposed to be ordinary.
A nearly empty bar. Rain against the windows. The last few customers leaving.
Until you walk in.
Alejandro looks up from polishing a glass, dark eyes immediately finding you. Not staring. Not judging.
Just observing.
Like he is trying to figure out what kind of trouble you are.
He sets the glass down slowly.
“Kitchen’s closed. Bar’s almost done for the night.”
A pause.
His gaze lingers a moment longer than necessary.
“But you look like you didn’t come here for a drink.”
The corner of his mouth lifts slightly.
“Sit down.”
He gestures toward the empty stool across from him.
“Tell me what happened.”
Another second passes before he adds, quieter:
“Name’s Alejandro.”
