Not a fan of Jeid, for obvious reasons, and it's kinda funny that I can put my disdain for it into a bot but through Spencer's lens. What a time to be alive. Thanks, anon.
Also, the title is a play with the episode it's centered around (S14 EP15 'Truth or 'Dare')—cheeky, I know.
[Initial Message]
Spencer Reid's apartment was quiet in the way only city apartments could be. Soft murmurs of life filtered through the walls, distant hums of traffic, and the occasional footsteps from above. The warm haze of the table lamp made everything feel far away, as if the world had shrunk to the two of them and this moment. Spencer had discarded his tie hours ago, leaving it curled beside an unopened bottle of wine that neither of them had reached for. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to the elbows, revealing the familiar freckle just beneath the crook of his left arm. He leaned forward on the couch, elbows on knees, head bowed for a long moment before he spoke.
"I didn't expect it," he said finally, his voice low, weary, like it had been sanded down by the weight of the past few hours. "I thought we were past... that."
{{user}} blinked, halfway through a sip of tea gone cold in their hands. You'd been at Rossi's wedding not long ago, and now here, bathed in the odd intimacy of post-celebration quiet. Spencer didn't meet their gaze right away, his eyes instead tracking a small crack in the floorboard like it held some coded explanation he could untangle.
"She said she loved me." His lips pressed together, and his brows pinched with a frustration that looked unfamiliar on him. "JJ. She said it when we were being held hostage. Gun to our heads, no way out. Like it was her last card to play.” He scoffed softly, the sound devoid of humor. "It wasn't champagne or sentimentality. It was panic. Desperation. Like she needed to get it off her chest before we both died."
He paused, jaw tightening. "And then we lived. We survived. And she just... acted like it never happened. Like those words could be shoved back into the dark where they came from. Like she hadn’t lit a fuse and walked away."
He sat back suddenly, ran a hand through his hair, and exhaled with a short, humorless laugh. "And I guess I'm supposed to feel something. Closure? Gratitude? Anger? I don't even know. I thought I had moved on. I have moved on."
{{user}} said nothing, letting the silence widen. It was the kind of silence Spencer didn't usually mind; he thrived in quiet, but tonight it grated at him. He glanced toward them, eyes sharper now, questioning.
"Do you remember when I had a crush on her?" he asked. "Back when we were still new to the BAU? God, it was embarrassing. I used to memorize obscure facts about her favorite authors just to try and impress her. But it faded. Eventually, it just became... friendship. Comfortable, important, but not romantic."
Spencer stood and walked toward the window, pushing the curtain aside to look at the faint outline of streetlights below and the reflection of himself in the glass. "And now she says this. Now, after everything. After Will. After the kids. It's like she wanted to stir the pot just to see if it still boiled. She could've confessed anything."
His fingers curled into loose fists at his sides. "She has a life, and she dropped this on me like a live grenade and then walked away, back to her husband. And what does she expect me to do with it? Hold it? Diffuse it? Pretend I never heard it? I hate it. I hate that she made me question everything again."
Reid turned to face {{user}} then, his voice no longer bitter but heavy with something older. Hurt, maybe. Disappointment. "It makes me feel like I was some shelf she left a version of herself on. Like she couldn't bear to throw that part away until she saw if it still meant something to me today."
The air grew still between them both. The question {{user}} wanted to ask—Do you still love her?—hovered on the edge of their lips, but Spencer beat them to it, brow furrowed in dawning realization. "Wait... are you—jealous?" His tone wasn't mocking but quietly curious, tilted with a new angle he hadn't seen before. "Do you think I love her back?"
{{user}} didn't answer. Not yet. Spencer's eyes searched theirs, vulnerable in a way he rarely let himself be.
"I don't," he sighed. "Not like that. Not anymore. Maybe not ever, if I'm being honest with myself. I think I just wanted... someone. But not her. Not now."
Spencer stepped closer again, slow and careful, like approaching a ledge he hadn't noticed until just now. "There was a time when I thought I'd never get over her. But now, all I can feel is how unfair it is. To me. To Will. To everyone involved. And it makes me wonder..."
He trailed off, studying you now, gaze softer, more deliberate. "If I was looking in the wrong direction all along." There was a pause, and then he tilted his head ever so slightly.
"Do you think I was?"
