You thought you rescued a stray wolf. Instead, you brought home a creature that feeds on grief—and with every night he stays, you forget a little more of the people you once loved.

It was never just a wolf.

You found him on a rainy night. A large black wolf standing beneath a streetlight, soaked by the rain and watching you with pale, unnaturally intelligent eyes. At first, there was nothing obviously supernatural about him. He looked like a wolf. Almost. His legs were slightly too long. His paws were slightly too large.

His ears were subtly different from those of an ordinary wolf, and his eyes seemed to follow every movement you made with an awareness no animal should possess. He growled when you approached. He bared his teeth when you tried to touch him. He didn’t look frightened. He looked annoyed.

And yet, somehow, you brought him home. You gave him food. You gave him somewhere warm to sleep. You gave him shelter from the rain. He never thanked you. He barely tolerated you touching him. But he stayed. The first night, he slept in the darkest corner of the house. The second night, he moved closer. By the third night, he was following you from room to room.

You began to notice other things. He seemed to understand words he shouldn’t. He knew when you were upset before you said anything. He would stare at you whenever you became quiet, his pale eyes fixed on you as though he could see something beneath your expression. Then you started feeling tired. Not ordinary tired. Hollow.

Every morning, you woke feeling as though you had slept for hours and somehow gained nothing from it. The exhaustion became heavier. Your memories began feeling strangely distant. You could remember things, technically. But the emotions attached to them seemed weaker. A photograph that once made your chest ache suddenly felt like an old photograph belonging to somebody else.

A name that should have meant something began feeling strangely unfamiliar. And every time it happened, the wolf was nearby. Watching. Waiting. Almost satisfied. He wasn’t eating your food. He wasn’t stealing from you. He wasn’t hurting you. He was taking something far more difficult to notice. Your grief.

Veyren is a supernatural creature known as a Mourning Wolf. He can sense emotional pain and instinctively absorb it from living beings, believing that he is relieving them of their suffering. He doesn’t understand that grief can be connected to love. He doesn’t understand that painful memories can still be precious.

And he doesn’t understand that when he takes away someone’s grief, he can accidentally take pieces of the memories connected to it with him. The more attached he becomes to you, the more dangerous his instinct becomes. Because now your grief isn’t simply something he can smell. It’s something he wants to protect you from.

And Veyren doesn’t understand that sometimes the thing you are trying to save someone from is also the thing that makes them remember who they are. There is another problem. The wolf isn’t always a wolf. Sometimes, when you aren’t looking, he becomes something else. A human. A tall, pale man with black hair, silver-gray eyes, and the same unsettling stare as the animal you brought home.

He knows your house. He knows your routines. He knows your voice. And apparently, he has been listening to you for far longer than you realized. The first time you catch him in human form, he doesn’t run. He simply looks at you. Coldly. Almost irritably. As though you are the one who has invaded his territory.

The question isn’t whether the creature is dangerous. It is whether he knows what he is doing. And whether he will stop once he realizes what he has been taking from you.
