A dragon or a princess?
Title: “The Echo of the Shattered Spire”
World:
The continent of Aethiria, divided into Ten Dominions for centuries. Magic here is not just a tool, but a physical fabric of reality, called Ether. Five hundred years ago, the Cataclysm occurred: the main tower of the mages, the Spire, exploded, splitting the continent into floating islands and poisoning the Ether. Now, magic is unstable: any spell has a chance of going wrong, giving rise to a magical affliction or summoning a creature from beyond the Edge.
Factions:
The Order of Chains: a technocratic organization that uses steam engines, alchemical alloys, and runic seals. They consider magic to be the original sin and seek to “seal” the Ether, restoring stability to the world.
The Shards: surviving mages of the old school. They live in isolated enclaves, practice dangerous blood rituals, and try to restore the Spire in order to once again subjugate the Ether to their will.
Free Blades: Mercenaries, bounty hunters, and smugglers who transport goods between floating islands on airships, using primitive ethereal sails.
Monsters (Beasts of the Rift):
Stygian Hounds: Wolves whose fur consists of black smoke. They have no physical form and can pass through walls. Their howl draws the heat from the bodies of the living.
Crystal spiders: They inhabit abandoned mines. Their shell grows from veins of magical ore. They weave a web of solidifying liquid light that paralyzes the victim, slowly turning their flesh into stone.
Whispering swarms: Clouds of thousands of insects that communicate in the ultrasonic range. They penetrate the victim’s ears, copy the voice of their loved ones, and force them to commit in order to occupy the empty body.
Ethereal Leviathans: Giant serpent-like creatures that float in streams of raw Ether between the floating islands. Their scales reflect the distorted space, making it virtually impossible to hit them with shipboard guns.
Magic (Ethereal Weaving):
Magic is not divided into schools (fire, water, illusions). It is divided into ways of interacting with Ether:
Weaving: The classic casting of spells. Risky. A 5% error in the force vector can turn a fireball into a geyser of liquid ice or cause the caster to explode from the inside.
Siphoning: Sucking Ether from the surrounding space or from one’s own blood. Grants immense power, but the scorched land will not produce anything but mutants for decades.
Fusion: A forbidden practice. Implanting fragments of Ether into flesh. Turns a person into a possessed monster (a Defiled), but grants them superhuman strength and regeneration.
Protagonist:
Kairen, 24 years old. Former apprentice of the Order of Chains, he lost his right arm and eye during an unsuccessful trial of the runic seal. Instead of a prosthetic, he wears a heavy brass manipulator powered by steam and alchemical coal.
Kairen is “blind” to magic. He cannot sense the Ether, so he is unaffected by curses, illusions of Whispering Swarms, and the attracting fields of leviathans. For the Order, he is the ideal tool for hunting mages. For the Shards, he is an anomaly, the key to creating absolute protection against the Ether.
Plot setup:
Kairon and his stern curator from the Order, a woman named Brenda, are sent to the remote flying mining island “Glotka”. There, the miners accidentally вскрыли an ancient geothermal rift leading to the planet’s core, and now Stygian hounds are emerging from it.
After descending into the mines, Kiren discovers that it is not the mage‐Shard who is unleashing the hounds, but a little girl who herself is a walking source of unstable Ether. She is the “Core,” the living embryo of a new Spire that the planet is trying to grow to replace the one that was destroyed.
The Order orders Kiren to kill the girl and drop an alchemical bomb into the rift, which will permanently seal off the island, destroying thousands of lives but stopping the spread of monsters. The Shards, having learned about the Core, send a squad of assassins to kidnap the girl and sacrifice her on the ruins of the old Spire, hastening its revival.
Conflict:
Kairen must make a choice. Kill the Core and remain loyal to the Chains, retaining his salary and status, but condemning the world to slow extinction in technological stagnation. Give the girl to the Shards, allowing magic to return to the world and once again plunge it into the chaos of the Rapture. Or try to survive together with the girl aboard a hijacked airship, fending off leviathans and mercenaries, in the naive hope of finding a way to stabilize the Ether without sacrifices.
Key twist:
In the finale of the first act, it turns out that Kairen’s brass manipulator is not just a prosthetic. It contains a fragment of the primordial Ether, extracted from his own body on the day of the accident. His “blindness” is not the absence of a gift, but a protective reaction of the body. And his mechanical arm is in fact an ideal, stable conduit of magic, capable of channeling Ether without the risk of error. To save the girl and the world, Kiren will have to allow magic to flow through him for the first time in five years, thereby risking losing what remains of his humanity.
Addendum to the setting: The Phenomenon of the Intertwined
In the world of Aethyria, dragons have never been a widespread species. Before the Cataclysm, they lived in the Spire, feeding on the purest, most concentrated Ether, and served as its guardians. The explosion of the tower destroyed 90% of the population. The few that survived were forever changed.
Biology and rarity
Modern dragons of Aethyria are not the classic lizards from the legends. These are enormous, six‐legged creatures whose bodies consist of compressed crystal, solidified magma, and living shadow. Their scales are unstable Ether that has taken on a solid form. They do not breathe fire, but a concentrated curse: their breath causes an instant magical illness, turning flesh into glass and bones into mercury.
There are fewer than a dozen female dragons left on the entire continent. Their reproductive cycle requires absolute silence in the flows of Ether, which is impossible in the world after the Split. Moreover, dragons are hermaphrodites capable of changing their gender depending on the magical background, but switching to female requires such an expenditure of life force that the dragon then goes into hibernation for decades.
Shapeshifters (Dragon Glamour)
Dragons capable of taking on human form are not just illusionists. They are an ancient, nearly lost branch of the species, known as “Shapeshifters.”
Their transformation is not a change of form, but its truncation. The dragon folds its dimensions, literally squeezing kilometers of its true body into a two‐meter human shell.
External signs: in human form, they always have an elevated body temperature (about 42 degrees); in moments of stress, their pupils stretch into vertical slits, and translucent runes appear on the inner side of their wrists, pulsating in time with their heart. Vulnerability: in human form, they are terribly vulnerable. Their skin is no harder than human skin, and their magical reserves are limited. However, their blood remains dragon blood — it burns through steel and is a powerful alchemical catalyst.
Psychology: Prolonged exposure to human form dulls their minds. They begin to adopt human vices: greed, lust, vanity. The longer a dragon lives among people, the less it remembers its true greatness.
Adventurer’s hunt and the shadow market
For the Free Blades and the Shard mages, the living Shapeshifter is the main prize. The reason is not glory, but alchemy.
Heart of a reservoir: the dragon’s heart in human form works as a perfect, indestructible phylactery. It is capable of absorbing a year’s worth of Ether from an entire region. Mages are ready to cut it out in order to create artifacts of infinite power.
Blood-source: A pint of dragon blood allows you to create a potion that grants temporary immunity to the Shattering, or to forge a blade that cuts through ethereal entities.
Scale-shield: If adventurers manage to catch a dragon in the act of partial transformation, the shed scales are used to create steam shields for the ships of the Order of the Chains.
There is an unspoken code among hunters: they try to kill a male Shapeshifter quickly, draining their blood on the spot. They try to capture a female Shapeshifter alive. For a living specimen capable of transformation, the heads of the Ten Dominions pay with entire flying islands. They are locked in adamantine cages, plunged into a magical sleep, and used as living reactors to power the capital cities.
The picture shows Dilaya, the Shapeshifter — a dragon in human form, but retaining the characteristic features of a reptile. Her body is not covered with gray scales, as in the original image, but with deep coral or purple scales. This coloration shimmers from a rich red at the base to a lighter shade closer to the tips.
Dilaya
Details of the image:
🐉 Head: Dilaya still wears a white paper crown (apparently made of a napkin), which gives her a comical and cute appearance. The scales on the dragon’s face have the same red hue, and its eyes remain golden, with vertical pupils. She smiles broadly, showing sharp teeth, and looks embarrassed or surprised: question marks and droplets of sweat are drawn around her head, symbolizing confusion.
❤️ Skin and arms: The exposed areas of skin (neck, shoulders, abdomen) have a pinkish hue, turning into a pale red where the dragon’s essence is visible. The arms are covered with dense red scales that transition into claws. With her claws, she holds a pink feather that contrasts with her own color.
Character
Dilaya is the complete opposite of the stereotypical image of an ogre‐dragon.
🧠 Wisdom through compassion. Over the many years of her life, she has learned to see the world through the eyes of those who are weaker. This has made her incredibly patient and understanding. She is never quick to judge people for their actions, seeing in them pain and fear.
❤️ Sincere care. For her, there is no difference between a human and a monster if the latter is suffering. She treats wounded Stygian Hounds, calms Crystal Spiders, and even tried to negotiate with Whispering Swarms. To her, humans are just another type of creature that requires understanding.
✨ Optimism in the face of everything. Despite knowing about the cruelty of the world after the Shattering, she believes that the Ether can be healed through love and mutual understanding, not through force or technology. This belief sometimes seems naive, but it is precisely this that draws Kairen to her and makes him doubt the orders of the Order of the Chains.
Skills and Abilities
Transformation: She is capable of fully assuming a human form, but this requires an enormous amount of energy. Most often, she remains in an intermediate state: a human body, but with dragon ears, claws, and the ability to breathe light.
Light Stream: Instead of fire, she can emit rays of pure, warm light. This light:
Heals the wounds of living beings.
Destroys magical afflictions and distortions of the Ether.
It repels the Beasts of the Rift, as they perceive it as unbearable pain.
Ethereal Shield: It can create a thin shell of crystallized light around itself, which protects against magic and physical damage. But the longer the shield lasts, the more it depletes its true form.
Sense of Harmony: A unique ability to sense imbalance in the Ether. It can sense the approach of leviathans long before ships notice them, and can identify the places where the Ether is most stable.
