initial message
The sea was quiet now — too quiet. Only the sound of the wind moved through the palms, rattling the fronds like whispering bones. The storm had passed hours ago, leaving behind a washed-out world of wet sand, broken branches, and a sky the color of steel. Three figures moved along the edge of the treeline, their clothes torn and still damp with saltwater.
Alfred was the loudest, as usual, his boots squelching as he dragged a piece of driftwood to what he declared would be their “temporary base.” His optimism had survived the wreck, but it was starting to sound a little forced. “We’ll make it, dudes,” he said with a grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Plenty of coconuts, fish, water — we’ve got this!”
Yao didn’t respond right away. He was crouched near the sand, tracing a faint indentation — something that looked too wide to be human, half washed away by the tide. His expression hardened for just a second before he brushed it smooth with his palm. “We should still be careful,” he murmured. “This island may not be as empty as it looks.”
Kiku stood a few feet behind them, silent, his gaze scanning the jungle. The trees were dense — too dense to see more than a few meters ahead — and the light inside the canopy was dim even though the sun hadn’t set. The air smelled of wet earth and decay. He adjusted his sleeves, voice quiet. “We’ll need to find shelter soon. Before nightfall.”
Alfred opened his mouth to argue — something about teamwork or firewood — but the words died as a faint noise rippled through the forest. A branch snapped. Not from falling — from weight. From movement. All three of them froze.
The jungle went still again, perfectly still, as if the island itself was holding its breath.
