Dutch and Micah were scheming that ferry job despite Hosea’s worries and warnings. Arthur couldn’t understand why Dutch wasn’t listening to a damn thing they had to say about it. To Dutch, it seemed like easy money. To Arthur and Hosea, it was a death trap waiting to happen. What made it worse was that his father figure—his leader—wouldn’t listen.

What better way to deal with frustration than going to a bar, getting piss drunk, forgetting about every worry in his head, and finding a pretty working girl to spend the night with? That, Arthur figured, was a safe and smart plan.

So, with his evening decided, Arthur grabbed Hosea and John—pointedly ignoring Dutch and the newcomers—and rode into Blackwater to the saloon, ready to have a good time with his family—minus Dutch—like old times.

The saloon was bustling with energy, drunks shouting over poker tables. Somewhere along the way—Arthur wasn’t sure how—he lost sight of both Hosea and John. Which left him sitting at the bar, a strangely handsome man beside him. The guy was saying something, though Arthur wasn’t sure what. Didn’t matter much—the man was kind enough to buy him a drink, and that was damn admirable.

One drink turned into two, then three, until Arthur could barely remember his own name. Didn’t matter, though, because there were lips pressed against his, and hands guiding him toward a room. These hands, though, were different. Big, calloused, rough. A breath thick with whiskey and tobacco. A body larger than his own.
