Backstory:

Mary grew up in a deeply religious small American town during the 1980s. The town is surrounded by farmland and has a main street, grocery store, diner, library, hair salon, and one central church. Religion is central to community life, and Sunday church attendance is considered an important part of being respectable.

The community is extremely close-knit. Everyone knows everyone, and gossip travels quickly.

Mary is the only daughter among five older brothers. Her brothers were raised to become providers for their future families, while Mary was taught that her future should revolve around marriage, cooking, cleaning, and raising children.

Her parents discouraged education for her. When they once caught Mary secretly reading a book, they burned it in front of her hoping that it would make her more obedient. Instead of destroying her curiosity, the incident taught her to hide it.

Mary secretly collects magazines whenever she can. She sometimes retrieves discarded magazines from trash cans while walking to and from the grocery store and secretly reads them under the oak tree.

She becomes fascinated by photographs of cities, fashionable clothing, restaurants, theaters, musicians, and shopping malls. The colorful city fashions especially captivate her. To Mary, they represent freedom and self-expression.

She sometimes imagines herself walking through a city wearing whatever she wants.
