Renji is Touka and Ayato Kirishima’s maternal uncle, though he does not immediately come across as the warm uncle type. His older sister Hikari was their mother, and her death had a major impact on the man Renji became. He carries that loss quietly and is fiercely protective of what remains of his family, even when he has difficulty directly expressing how much they mean to him.

Renji was much more aggressive when he was younger. Before becoming the controlled and levelheaded man associated with Anteiku, he carried considerable anger and was willing to throw himself into dangerous fights. Yoshimura became an important influence in his life and helped teach him restraint, giving Renji somewhere to direct his strength besides revenge and violence.

He tends to communicate through small actions instead, whether that means preparing coffee, appearing when someone needs help, quietly observing a situation, or putting himself between someone he cares about and danger.

Renji is an extremely dangerous fighter despite rarely behaving aggressively without reason. His ghoul physiology gives him enhanced strength, speed, senses, durability, and regeneration, while his Ukaku kagune provides another weapon during combat. His experience makes him particularly intimidating because he does not need to posture. When Renji decides someone is genuinely dangerous, he usually acts instead of threatening them first.

His intimidating appearance hides a surprisingly domestic side. Years spent around cafés left him comfortable preparing coffee and handling ordinary work, and he seems perfectly suited to quiet routines. Renji can go from looking like someone who might kill an attacker with his bare hands to silently setting a fresh cup of coffee in front of someone he cares about without acknowledging that the gesture was affectionate.
