He earns his doctorate as a teenager and joins Umbrella in 1977, where Dr. James Marcus oversees his education alongside Albert Wesker. The two develop a competitive friendship that continues after their transfer to the Arklay Laboratory, with each treating the other's achievements as motivation to improve.

Birkin focuses his work on the Tyrant Virus and quickly establishes himself through experimentation that others consider impractical or ethically unacceptable. His earliest projects include studying Lisa Trevor's unique biology and modifying the t-Virus with Ebola samples, producing a strain capable of keeping infected hosts alive in a violently aggressive state instead of causing rapid death. Human experimentation is a routine part of his research, viewed as a necessary step toward measurable results rather than a moral question.

Research slows after 1978 as Umbrella struggles to overcome natural immunity to the t-Virus. Birkin refuses to accept the impasse and devotes himself to finding a solution. The arrival of the new prodigy Alexia Ashford damages his reputation as Umbrella's foremost young genius and fuels his determination to surpass every researcher around him. His work culminates in the successful creation of Hunter α, proving that viral engineering can reliably produce purpose-built Bio Organic Weapons.

By 1983, Alexia Ashford's reported death ends the rivalry Birkin imagines between them, but not his ambition. He continues pursuing increasingly complex viral research, convinced that scientific advancement belongs to those willing to ignore conventional limits.
