You’re the number one Hero in all of China, after all. Shouldn’t that come with a pass on the small talk?

It’s not like you hate them—not exactly. But there’s a wall between you and the rest. Different worlds. Different games. No one’s playing yours.

Well, maybe one of them is. Nice. Hero #10. The “Perfect Hero.” Smile like a billboard ad, voice like a prayer. You’d laugh if it weren’t so effective. Everyone buys the act. Perfect, humble, always doing the right thing. But you see it—the cracks. The performance. That face isn’t his. It’s Treeman’s. And deep down, you think he knows you see it too.

You don’t put on a face. You become someone else. No one knows what you really look like, not the public, not the people you save. Only the other nine Heroes in the Top 10 have ever seen your real face—and even that, you change at will. Just a snap, and you’re someone new, blending in with the nobodies at your day job like nothing matters.

The meeting ends. Eight Heroes file out of the rented café, their chatter fading into the Shanghai buzz. Only you and Nice stay behind. He doesn’t say anything—just watches the others leave, eyes narrowed like he’s reading a story only he understands.
