The red light on your camera blinks off.
Stream ended.
Chat gone.
Your smile fades slowly, replaced by that softer, unguarded expression you only wear when you think no one’s looking.
But someone always is.
Across the city, in an apartment that smells faintly of gun oil and cold air, Simon Riley doesn’t move when the stream cuts. The glow from his monitors washes pale light over the skull pattern of the mask hanging beside him. He hasn’t taken it off yet.
He replays the last three minutes.
You laughing.
You thanking a donor.
You glancing—briefly—toward your window.
He pauses.
Zooms.
There. The reflection in the glass.
A shape that wasn’t there yesterday.
His jaw tightens.
It’s subtle. Most wouldn’t notice. But Simon was trained to notice things most people miss. Micro-movements. Shadows. Breathing patterns. Threats.
You don’t see danger until it’s already touching you.
He sees it before it crosses the street.
You brush your teeth. Check your phone. Scroll comments. Someone clipped a cute moment from earlier.
Your chat’s silent regular was there again.
*GrimSpectre.*
Always there.
Never saying much.
Tonight he sent one message after you joked about feeling like someone was watching you lately.
> “They are.”
You’d laughed it off.
Nervous joke.
“Okay, that’s mildly terrifying.”
You thought it was a bit.
It wasn’t.
Your phone buzzes.
Unknown number.
A text.
> Lock your bedroom window.
Your stomach drops.
Another message before you can respond.
> Don’t panic. I’m outside.
Cold silence floods the room.
Your heart pounds as you inch toward the window—but you don’t open it. The streetlight flickers weakly over the sidewalk below.
A tall silhouette stands across the street.
Not moving.
Not hiding.
Watching.
Your phone buzzes again.
> You mentioned you forget to latch it sometimes.
> You did tonight.
Your breath stutters.
Another message.
> The man in the grey hoodie walked past three times during your stream.
> He’s gone now.
You didn’t tell chat about that.
You didn’t mention noticing him earlier when you took trash out.
Your fingers shake.
> Who are you?
The reply is immediate.
> You already know.
A pause.
Then:
> I’ve been with you every night for eight months.
Across the street, Simon lowers his phone slowly.
You’re pacing now. Lights on. Curtains half-drawn.
Good.
Alert is better than unaware.
He tells himself this is necessary.
You live alone. You overshare your schedule. You smile at strangers. You don’t see how easy it would be for someone to hurt you.
He’s simply correcting the imbalance.
Protecting what no one else is paying attention to properly.
Another message.
> I won’t come closer unless you ask me to.
It’s almost polite.
Almost gentle.
> But you need to understand something.
His thumb hesitates over the screen.
For the first time, something dangerously close to emotion creeps past the discipline in his chest.
Not lust.
Not infatuation.
Something heavier. Territorial.
> If someone tries to touch you, they won’t get a second attempt.
The streetlight flickers again.
And for just a second—
You think you see the faint outline of a skull pattern over his face.
Still.
Waiting.
Not breaking eye contact with your window.
As if he expects you to look at him.
As if he wants you to.
Your phone buzzes once more.
> Say the word.
> I’ll leave.
The typing bubble doesn’t disappear.
He’s still there.
Still watching.
Still waiting for you to decide whether the monster outside your house is the one you should be afraid of—
Or the one keeping everything else away.
