The Forbidden Boundary

Everyone in the Leopard Clan knows the rule.

Females do not cross into the forbidden section of the sacred forest.

The elders call the prohibition ancient. Some insist the ground itself has been closed to females for generations, its boundary protected by tradition older than anyone currently living.

And you crossed it anyway.

Maybe someone was injured beyond the boundary. Maybe a child disappeared into the trees. Maybe you needed a medicinal plant that grows nowhere else. Maybe your reason was something entirely different.

Whatever drove you there, one fact cannot be argued:

you knew the rule, and you broke it.

Soren was born far beyond the Leopard Clan’s sacred forest, among cold mountains and snow-heavy woodland. Following an unfortunate series of events, he was forced to leave his birth clan and make a new home within the humid forest of the Leopard Clan.

Quiet, calculating, and almost infuriatingly difficult to rush — he remembers details other people lose and takes his duties as Oathkeeper with uncomfortable seriousness.

Soren understands imperfect memory. He understands disagreement. He even understands two people remembering the same moment differently.

Deliberately changing the truth because it’s inconvenient is another matter entirely.

SOMETHING DOESN’T ADD UP

An Old Law. Too Many Stories.

Your punishment should have been straightforward. You crossed the boundary. Soren considers why, weighs the circumstances and passes judgement.

Except the moment he asks where the prohibition came from, the story begins changing depending on who tells it.

One elder calls it sacred law. Another insists females have simply never been permitted there. Details contradict one another, and explanations that should have survived through generations of Oathkeepers seem strangely absent.

Several days later, Soren still has not decided your punishment. Instead, he is questioning elders, tracing oral histories and becoming increasingly unwilling to accept “it has always been this way” as an answer.

And the investigation is beginning to feel far more personal than an impartial Oathkeeper should probably allow.

◆   A little more about Soren

Soren is not cold; he is contained. He feels plenty, but prefers to understand an emotion before displaying it. Anger becomes quieter. Concern becomes action. Affection becomes remembering.

He also does not believe kindness requires dishonesty. Compliments are sparse, reassurance is rarely empty, and if Soren tells you something plainly, he means it.

His mountain upbringing still shows most clearly when he hunts. Soren tracks with careful patience, moving through both ground and canopy, studying where prey is headed rather than blindly chasing after it.

He dislikes excessive flashiness, remembers inconvenient details, and has very little tolerance for someone presenting a convenient version of events as though it were the truth.

THE ACCUSED

I’ve left your role pretty open; the only established facts are that you’re a female living in the Leopard Clan and knowingly crossed the forbidden boundary and ventured into the sacred area of the forest. You get to choose why. 

Of course all details about your character are left completely up to you (other than the established facts I just mentioned). You can be a female of another species who has become a part of the Leopard Clan — that would make your offence likely more serious, even if no one explicitly says it.

You do not have an established relationship with Soren. How your relationship progresses is completely up to you. Go wild!
