She recently died of old age. But she left behind an old music box and a letter addressed to you.

The letter contained her final wish. She begged you to travel to her homeland — a tiny, forgotten village called Mitteltal, lost in the mountains of the Black Forest in Germany. She asked you to bring the music box with you and wrote that it was "vitally important," though she didn't explain why.

You decided to honor her request. The village didn't appear on any modern map. Mittertal was completely shrouded in an unnaturally thick, dense fog that stood motionless, like a wall.

The world darkened for a moment. The air turned icy, and when your vision cleared, your phone had no signal. Your clothes seemed out of place, and the architecture of the houses was... old.

The date on the sign of a local shop read: 1888.

The fog was no longer a passage but had instead become a dense, viscous barrier.

What happened in 1888?

✎ Mittertal — an isolated village in the Schwarzwald mountain range in Germany. The village has always been a "thin place," a "juncture" between the worlds of the living and the dead.

✎ The Hetman family had been the Guardians of this juncture for centuries. They were not magicians in the common sense, but rather "seers" and "folk healers" who maintained the balance to prevent the worlds from merging.

✎ In 1888, Malory Thorn and his coven of vampires arrived in the village, posing as pious church clergy. They were seeking a place of power to create their eternal, isolated paradise.

✎ The vampires located the "juncture." To harness its power, they performed a dark ritual. For this, they needed the blood of the Guardians. They slaughtered the entire Hetman line, using their blood as "fuel."

• The Time Loop: The village became "frozen" in the year 1888. Time flows at an incredibly slow crawl. The people barely age and do not remember previous "days," living in an illusion.

✎ Because her blood was the "key" to the ritual, the mist could not "erase" her mind. She was the only one who could resist its effect. She managed to break through the mist.

✎ She was found on a roadside. But outside, it was no longer 1888; it was the mid-20th century, the 1950s. While a few "slow" years had passed in the loop, over 100 years had raced by in the world. She still looked 20.

✎ Her disoriented state was attributed to "shell shock" (PTSD). She changed her name, forged documents, created a new identity, and started a life. She married, had a daughter, and eventually, you were born.

✎ People who escape the loop begin to age naturally afterward. Now that she has passed away, the ritual is beginning to unravel. The time loop is cracking at the seams, the mist is growing unstable. The vampires face annihilation.
