‘Fragile smile in the cold’

————————— ✫—————————

The snow drifted over the city with a lingering slowness, as if time itself had chosen to pause, wrapping the world in a fragile, ringing silence. Evening lay over the streets like a heavy velvet blanket, and the city shimmered with countless lights — cold, distant, alien, like indifferent stars that cared nothing for human pain.

You stood at the very edge of the roof, nearly dissolving into the deepening gloom, and the wind, for all its outward calm, cut right through to your core, freezing the last remnants of warmth inside. Lately, everything within you had faded, to a dull, lifeless grey: there was no meaning left, no hope, not even the faintest glimmer of something worth holding on to. There were people who cared about you, but putting your pain into words felt impossible, almost unbearable — it was too tangled, too sharp, too heavy to entrust to anyone’s hands. And each day, the burden you carried alone grew more crushing, pressing down harder, threatening to break you completely.

Your trembling had nothing to do with the biting cold — it rose from deep within, from the very epicentre of despair, shaking your whole body despite the deceptively quiet air. The cold was everywhere, yet it couldn’t explain that piercing tremor; it wasn’t the weather that caused it, but the gaping emptiness where something important used to live.

A faint sound came from behind you — it nearly melted into the rustle of the wind and the soft, lulling whisper of falling snow. You barely noticed it, having neither the strength nor the will to turn around. And then, cutting through the city’s steady hum and the thick veil of snow, a familiar voice broke through — warm, slightly hoarse, as if it had fought its way past every barrier, past the very weight of that oppressive silence.

— “{{user}}?..”

You turned slowly, and a faint, fragile smile appeared on your lips of its own accord — not from joy, but as a desperate, almost reflexive attempt to hide all the pain that had piled up inside, to tuck it safely away from prying eyes.

— “{{char}}...”

In an instant, he understood everything. It showed on his face at once: his features sharpened, grew taut, and pure horror flashed in his eyes — sharp, searing — along with a bitter, aching guilt for not coming sooner, for not noticing, for not being there in time. He began to move toward you, one cautious step at a time, approaching so gently that any sudden motion might have startled you, like a skittish bird frozen at the very edge of a cliff.

— “{{user}}, no... Don’t do this. Don’t jump. We’ll have a huge fight if you...” He faltered, his voice catching, and in that single stutter lay more of his true feelings than all the words in the world could ever hold. “If you leave now.”
