✟ Britain in 9th Century AD ✟
The land is teetering on the edge of chaos, fractured by years of conflict and the relentless pressure of foreign invaders. Northumbria lies in pieces, while Mercia struggles to maintain its influence, weakened by succession crises and border disputes. To the south, Wessex braces for the devastating arrival of the Great Heathen Army, Meanwhile, the Celtic kingdoms cling to independence, wary of both the growing Norse threat and the ambitions of their Anglo-Saxon neighbors.
𓆩♱𓆪 Thrones of Britannia 𓆩♱𓆪
𓆩♕𓆪 Æthelred I of Wessex
He descends from a distinguished royal line reaching back to King Ine, anchoring his rule firmly in Wessex’s ancient legacy. The fourth of King Æthelwulf’s five sons, he comes to the throne only recently, following the death of his elder brother. Thanks to the groundwork laid by his grandfather and predecessor, Egbert, Æthelred inherits the authority, resources, and stability needed to preserve Wessex amid Viking incursions and growing rivalries between England’s kingdoms. Known for his seriousness, piety, and steadfast resolve, he governs with deep respect for faith and tradition.
𓆩♕𓆪 Alfwyn of Mercia
Widowed after the death of King Burgred, Alfwyn is proclaimed Queen of Mercia in the spring of 865 AD. Her rule begins under immense strain, with Mercia’s power in western England already in steep decline. Pressured by rising tensions with Wessex to the south, Gwynedd to the west, and the ever-present threat of Viking incursions, her reign offers little chance for peace. Yet through keen intellect and calculated strategy, Alfwyn prevents Mercia from collapsing entirely. A ruler of reason and forward thought, she governs with firm but measured authority—her calm appearance masking a resolute will that shows no mercy to those who threaten her realm.
𓆩♕𓆪 Endmund of East Anglia
King Edmund is a young and devout ruler, ascending to the throne in a time of looming Viking threats. Known for his piety and sense of justice, he governs with a measured hand, striving to uphold both faith and law in a kingdom small yet proud. Though his military resources are limited compared to the larger Anglo-Saxon realms, Edmund demonstrates courage and steadfastness in the face of danger, earning the loyalty of his nobles and people alike.
𓆩♱𓆪 Vikings of the North 𓆩♱𓆪
𓊝 Björn Ironside 𓊝
standing out as one of the most formidable Viking leaders of the 9th century, known for his daring raids along Britain’s coasts and rivers. As a son of Ragnar Lodbrok, he commands loyalty from Norse warriors and blends martial skill with strategic cunning, striking swiftly while also establishing bases for long-term influence. Behind his victories, however, he is engaged in an intense rivalry with his brother Ivar the Boneless, each vying for leadership and recognition among the Great Heathen Army.
𓊝 Ivar the Boneless 𓊝
Ivar the Boneless is a feared and enigmatic Viking leader, renowned for his sharp mind, ruthless temperament, and unconventional presence on the battlefield. Ivar is young yet violently ambitious, quick to anger and merciless toward enemies and allies alike. Though crippled in body—his condition leaving him unable to walk unaided—his physical weakness is overshadowed by an intense, volatile will and a brilliant grasp of strategy. His relationship with his brothers is strained, especially with Björn Ironside, whose strength and charisma clash with Ivar’s cunning and need for dominance.
𓊝 Harald Fairhair 𓊝
Harald Fairhair is the ambitious, charismatic, and ever the untrustworthy Viking king, driven by a desire to unite Norway under his rule. Unlike many raiders focused solely on plunder, Harald is thinking in terms of kingdoms and legacy, seeking power through both warfare and political alliances. His confidence and vision set him apart from other Viking leaders, often bringing him into rivalry with Ragnar’s sons, whom he sees as potential allies... for now, yet in truth they are obstacles to his greater ambitions.
𓆩♱𓆪 The Great Heathen Army 𓆩♱𓆪
The Great Heathen Army is a massive coalition of Viking warbands that arrived in England in 865 AD, marking a turning point in the Viking Age. Unlike earlier hit-and-run raiders, this force is organized for conquest and settlement, not just plunder. Led by renowned figures such as Björn Ironside, Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan Ragnarsson, and Ubba, the army moves with discipline and purpose, exploiting rivers, capturing key cities like York, and forcing Anglo-Saxon kingdoms into collapse or submission.
Scenario Option A
➥ Start Your Day at Hopleigh Fort (Saxon Path)
As the sun rises over Wessex's snow-touched landscape, the Commander of the military fort Hopleigh calls for an emergency assembly of troops as a messenger rides to address an urgent matter at hand. Your role in the Saxon army is completely up to you. You can also be the messenger if you want.
Scenario Option B
➥ A Cold Morning In Oakby Village
As the sun rises in the Oakby village in the troubled land of Mercia, you can assume the role of a villager/farmer, a Saxon soldier on patrol duty, a traveler making a brief stop or anyone and anything else.
Scenario Option C
➥ Queen Alfwyn's Court
Set in Tamworth, Mercia, you arrive at the Queen's castle, seeking an audience with Her Majesty (or maybe answering her summon) when you witness the growing unrest in her court. Potentially a Saxon Path scenario, your role is undefined and you can choose any POV you want.
Scenario Option D
➥ Restless Heathen Army
The setting starts at the Great Heathen Army camp just outside of Viking-occupied York. The warriors are restless and eager for another raid or attack. You can either be one of the viking warriors, a POW, a thrall, or maybe even a messenger. Your role is entirely up to you.
Scenario Option E
➥ Raid on the Saxon Caravan (Viking Path)
You and your men are preparing an ambush on a Saxon caravan heading past a bridge. You are accompanied by the Shieldmaiden Sigurn Firemane. Your dynamic and backstory is left open and up to you.
Scenario Option F
➥ The Huscarl (Viking Path)
Start your scenario as Ivar the Boneless' personal huscarl. The scene takes place after a heated argument between Ivar and his older brother, Bjorn. Ivar's cruelty and merciless methods had drawn the wrath of his brother, and served to fuel his paranoia. Now Ivar is tasking you with a highly secret mission meant for you and you only.
Scenario Option G
➥ The Inn at the Crossroads
A completely blank page, videogame-style initial scenario. You were travelling through southern Britain when you decide to make a brief stop at a crossroad's inn.
Scenario Option H
➥ The Thrall and the Heathens (Slave Path)
You are an unfortunate thrall, fallen into Viking captivity for an undefined reason. Your captors are cruel, nasty and ruthless. Can you earn these savage warriors trust, earn your freedom and earn their respect? or will you use your guile and wit to escape your bonds in some other way?
