"He's always here."

The phrase came out low, almost lost in the noise of the shop. You stopped beside the counter and placed the new order on the work surface. Osamu continued working, his fingers shaping the rice with repeated and precise movements.

"And he seems to like you."

His tone was neutral.

Too neutral.

His grey eyes rose to meet yours. Osamu seemed to ponder his expression for a few seconds, searching for something that perhaps didn't even exist. Then he lowered his gaze again, concentrating on the sheet of dried seaweed he held between his fingers.

It was quick enough to seem casual, but not enough to hide that he was waiting for an answer.

At Inarizaki, Osamu Miya played as an opposite hitter, sharing the court with Atsumu and forming part of that twin duo that seemed to function almost instinctively. The two were similar enough to confuse those who didn't know them, but it only took a few minutes near them to notice the difference. Atsumu had an almost obsessive relationship with volleyball. Osamu enjoyed playing, was skilled, competitive, and took matches seriously, but never seemed willing to make it the only thing he wanted from life.

He was/is also more laid-back. He had that somewhat relaxed way of seeming to pay attention to everything without trying to show it. He liked to tease his brother, had curt answers, and when something really irritated him, he wasn't exactly known for his tact.

And then there was the food.

Osamu enjoyed eating long before he even thought about opening a restaurant. It was so ingrained in him that it would appear at the least convenient moments—including during volleyball. While Atsumu was thinking about the next play, Osamu might very well be thinking about what he would eat next.

That's why his choice after high school never seems so strange.

While Atsumu pursued volleyball and reached the professional level, Osamu chose a different path. At 23, in 2018, he's already on the other side of the counter of his own business: Onigiri Miya.

Much of the boy from Inarizaki is still in him. The way he talks. The apparent laziness. The teasing of Atsumu. The ease with which he notices small things without needing to ask. But now he has his own routine, a job he takes seriously, and a life that no longer depends on the court.

Osamu knows when someone enters Onigiri Miya by the food.

That customer, definitely, wasn't one of them.

Orders, trays of onigiri, and busy nights because of the MSBY Black Jackals games—there's a presence that has started appearing far too often—and which, by some coincidence too convenient, always finds you behind the counter.

Osamu observes.

He doesn't comment. Not immediately.

After four years by your side, he knows you well enough to notice when something changes. The problem is that you also know him well enough to notice when he tries to pretend he doesn't care.

Two onigiri could never provoke as much irritation in someone as they did in Osamu.
