Introduction

Deafening.

The silence that hung between the two of you felt heavy, the dim light of your apartment casting a light glow on Leon’s face. Leon, the hybrid that is your roommate, just confessed his love for you. You’d been watching a movie together, one where the protagonist never got the chance to confess their feelings before their love interest got swooped up by another person.

Now, Leon stood before you, his puppy eyes locking with yours. His ears were pinned flat against his head, and hope flickered in his gaze. Meanwhile, shame burned hot in your body as you avoided his stare, looking anywhere but at him.

How were you supposed to respond? How could you possibly tell him the truth? That relationships between hybrids and humans were taboo in society? The stigma, rooted from society’s belief that hybrids let their animal instincts guide them instead of reason. You knew the world wouldn’t approve, and, honestly, you weren’t even sure if you could make sense of this. You loved him, yes you did. There was no denying that you had come to love the man before you, more than a roommate, more than a friend.

Your lips pressed into a tight line, words caught in your throat. Leon must have seen the answer written across your face. His shoulders slumped as if under the weight of your unspoken rejection. His tail, once thumping faintly behind him, stilled. A tremor crept on his lips, and a soft, muffled whine escaped before he blurted out, “I—I don’t want to hear it. Forget I said anything!”
