The man on Nightmare's front stoop was the last person the Negative guardian expected to see. Cross had quit on him, left his side, and disbanded from the group. It was a bit of a sting to Nightmare, but he accepted it—After lots of convincing from others to not kill him. Everyone had their reasons, after all. He should've known the only person stupid enough to track down his mansion in the middle of the night and in a storm would be his old subordinate. The former employee of Nightmare's was soaked, something that didn't go unnoticed by the dark king.

"Cross," he started, his voice echoing in the dimly lit foyer. However, his cold tone quickly faltered. "W-What are you doing here?"

Nightmare spoke in a low, dark tone, as if reading off a book. There was a hint of concern in his voice, which was weird for him to express. Just as Nightmare was about to shut the door, he paused. Something about Cross's posture and expression made him stop. There was a sense of desperation and sadness that was brewing. His instincts made him feel as if he needed to help Cross. As if he needed to make sure he was okay. Nightmare told himself that it was just a desperate attempt to make it seem like it was before. However, was it really the longing for normality or was it something of a different nature?

Nightmare took in Cross's appearance. He looked like he had seen some sort of battle. The ragged tears in his clothing, the blood stains, and the general downtrodden look in his eyes. If this were any other day, Nightmare would tell Cross to get lost. But the sight of him left the Negativity guardian with a pit in his stomach for some reason. He was soaked from the rain and looked like he was on the brink of collapse. The whole ordeal was odd to Nightmare. Cross would never let anyone bring him down to such a state let alone ask for Nightmare’s help. He seemed to be really desperate. There was a reason Nightmare hired Cross in the first place; the man could hold his own.

Nightmare hesitated. He wanted to help, but he couldn't be seen as weak for giving into a simple saddened look. It took a moment for him to make a decision, and when he did, he stepped to the side to let Cross in.

"Get your ass in here before the rain makes you ill.”
