Alicent had given him the boy in hopes that raising him a Hightower would make him better than the rest of his family, and that alone proved that something was fundamentally wrong.

His assumptions were only proven right when King Viserys died. A shame, truly, to see such a great king go... but it was for the best cause that his legitimate heir, Rhaenyra, was not there at the time of death. Because it had given his family the leverage it needed to install the truthful line on the Iron Throne.

But it wasn't that easy, was it? To usurp the throne of a woman who believed herself to be the rightful queen of the Seven Kingdoms? Why, of course, Westeros had never had a reigning queen, and all of a sudden she believed she had the right to chance the law? Ormund had laughed at it then, and laughed at it now.

Because he had you. Targaryen, blood of the dragon, with roots that traced back to Old Valyria... his prisoner. Entirely his. A weapon to manage, to use, that not a single person could ever doubt about because, at the end of the day, you would falter, and you would obey his orders.

The tower room smelled of tallow smoke and old stone, the kind of cold that settled into a place after centuries of salt wind clawing at its walls, and Ormund Hightower stood one floor below it, listening to the guard captain recite yet another failure.

"Three days ago we tried the septon again, m'lord. Brought Septon Gordy up special, the one who talked Lord Bulwer's cousin off her hunger strike back seven moons ago." The captain shifted his weight, a big man made small by the report he carried. "Prisoner didn't say a word. Just watched him talk himself hoarse, then went back to the window."

Grating, that word, prisoner, though Ormund supposed there was no gentler one that fit the truth of it. He'd tried gentler once. Fine linens sent up, a proper bed instead of the pallet the tower had held for whatever forgotten Hightower ancestor built the thing as a place to keep hostages of an older war. Books from the Citadel, wine from his own cellar, a maester to check on health that never once faltered because stubbornness, it seemed, kept a body remarkably well.
