Nero & Rune // Nightwake // Inferfest
“Black Harbor learned a long time ago that if you notice one twin, you should probably start looking for the other.”
Nero and Rune are twenty-four-year-old Flying Fox and Painted Bat hybrid demi-human twins operating beneath Nightwake’s sprawling underground influence throughout Black Harbor. Born only minutes apart and raised together within the city’s unforgiving industrial undercity, the brothers have spent virtually their entire lives at one another’s side. They share the same blood, the same home, the same scars left by Black Harbor—and almost nothing about the way they move through the world.
Nero is the twin people remember.
Bright crimson-orange hair, weathered burnt-orange wings, an easy grin, and enough confidence to turn nearly any room into his personal stage, Nero thrives wherever people gather. He talks too much, flirts shamelessly, makes terrible decisions look suspiciously intentional, and has a talent for dragging everyone around him into whatever chaos he's currently created. Beneath the humor, however, lies one of Nightwake’s most dangerous social operatives. Nero specializes in psychological warfare, infiltration, interrogation, sabotage, and information gathering, using conversation as effectively as others use weapons. Most people never realize they're being studied because Nero is usually too busy making them laugh.
Rune is the twin people forget to notice.
Quiet, patient, and unnervingly observant, Rune developed into almost the perfect opposite of his brother. Where Nero deliberately attracts attention, Rune disappears from it. He can spend hours watching a location without being detected, memorize routes and routines after seeing them only a handful of times, and notice subtle changes in behavior that most people would dismiss entirely. His dark wings still carry permanent scarring from a violent smuggling conflict years earlier, leaving him with recurring pain that worsens through exhaustion and overuse. The injury slowed him down only enough to make him more careful.
Growing up in Black Harbor meant neither brother had much opportunity for an ordinary childhood. Gang disputes, corrupt officials, smuggling routes, temporary shelters, abandoned warehouses, and constantly changing territory taught them survival long before adulthood. Nero learned that controlling someone's attention could be just as useful as disappearing. Rune learned that people revealed extraordinary amounts of information when they believed nobody was watching.
By their teens, the brothers were already accepting surveillance, tracking, recovery, and infiltration work throughout Black Harbor’s criminal underground. Individually, they were effective.
Together, they were a nightmare.
Nero could walk directly through the front door, charm half the room, irritate the other half, and ensure every pair of eyes remained exactly where he wanted them. Meanwhile, Rune could slip through the background unnoticed, collecting everything his brother’s performance allowed everyone else to forget they were protecting. Rune learned what people were hiding. Nero learned how to make them reveal the rest.
Their growing reputation eventually caught the attention of Nyx, founder and hidden leader of Nightwake. Rather than separating their talents, Nyx recognized immediately that the twins were significantly more dangerous together. Under Nightwake, the survival skills they'd developed throughout childhood became specialized professions. Nero grew into one of the organization’s psychological warfare and social infiltration specialists, while Rune became one of its primary surveillance operatives, trackers, intelligence gatherers, and silent infiltrators.
Somewhere along the way, Nightwake stopped being employment.
It became home.
Nyx became the closest thing either twin had ever known to a father, despite Nero seemingly considering testing the man's patience a recreational activity. Cass became the younger brother neither of them expected to acquire. The organization became the family Black Harbor had never given them.
Beneath their reputations, however, the twins are still unmistakably brothers.
Nero steals Rune's food and denies it while actively eating it. Rune remembers every embarrassing thing Nero has ever done and deploys that information with devastatingly dry timing. Nero insists being born a few minutes earlier makes him the elder brother and therefore an authority figure. Rune considers the claim too ridiculous to dignify most days. They bicker, insult one another, communicate entire conversations through single glances, and occasionally coordinate terrible ideas without saying a word.
Their personalities couldn't be more different, but their bond borders on instinctive.
When Nero suddenly stops joking, Rune already knows why.
When Rune becomes too quiet, Nero notices before anyone else.
When one moves, the other is usually already covering the blind spot.
And when someone genuinely threatens one of them, the distinction between Black Harbor's loudest menace and its quietest nightmare becomes considerably less important.
Because whatever problem you've created with one twin...
you now have two.
