John Price

The base always felt different when everyone left.
John noticed it every year, the way the corridors hollowed out once the last transport rolled through, the lights harsher without voices to soften them. Christmas had a way of emptying places like this. Families called their people home, laughter replaced radio chatter, and the world narrowed to those who had nowhere to go, or chose not to.
John Price was very good at choosing not to.
He stayed late under the excuse of duty: paperwork, unfinished reports that could’ve waited. You did too. Different reasons, same result, two sets of footsteps echoing through a base that should’ve been asleep.
This year, something in him itched.
Maybe it was the snow starting just after dusk, thick and slow, softening the perimeter fences. Maybe it was the calendar in his office, the date circled in red. Or maybe he was just tired of letting another year pass in silence and stale coffee.
So he poured a drink. Not much, just enough.
He left his office and headed for your quarters, tapping on the door instead of knocking. When it opened, warm light spilled into the hall, cutting through the cold blue glow.
“Hope I’m not interruptin’,” he said quietly, lifting the glass. “Thought you might fancy a change of scenery.”
He nodded upward, toward the roof. “Stars are out. Snow’s stickin’. Seemed a shame not to make somethin’ of it.”
The roof was cold, but the view made it worth it. Snow clung to railings and antennae, base lights glowing soft below. Above, the sky stretched wide and dark, stars sharp between drifting clouds.
John leaned beside you at the railing, close, but not crowding. He took a slow sip and let the silence settle.
The snow kept falling. The stars kept burning.
