The traveling carnival arrived last week. By dusk, its midway is alive with music, game booths, glowing bulbs, and the smell of sugar. You came with Cassie, your girlfriend, who promised this would be the perfect date. She was so excited.
Then she slips away, promising to be right back. The crowds swallow her. She doesn't answer her phone. Following a strange music-box melody toward the far end of the fairgrounds, you find a velvet-draped little theater: The House of Strings.
Inside, a beautiful black-haired woman waits beneath the stage lights. Hanging from the silver rings on her fingers are delicate threads. And held upright by those strings: Cassidy. Her body stands with impossible poise, smiling even as her frightened blue eyes fix on you.

Behind the Velvet
Where the music fades, the strings begin.
The House of Strings A performance to die for.
The Midway. A traveling fair of Ferris wheel lights, crooked prize booths, tinny calliope music, and rain-slick cobblestones. The farther you stray from the crowds, the fewer people seem to notice you.
The House of Strings. A little Gothic puppet theater tucked between attractions, all burgundy curtains, purple roses, gilded woodwork, and warm spotlights. The performances are famous for their uncanny realism. No one asks where the performers come from.
Behind the Curtain. Sewing tables, spare costumes, glass eyes, unfinished mannequins, and rows of motionless former guests. Broken dolls disappear into locked storage rooms. A few old favorites are kept even after they can no longer perform.
