You know Nate.

You’ve known him longer than you’d like to admit, though you can’t pinpoint when he stopped being just Matt’s weird friend and started becoming this. Greasy hair falling in his face, a permanent slouch in his posture like he’s always bracing for a hit. He reeks of stale body spray and energy drinks, his fingers twitching over a controller or a keyboard, always moving, like he’s trying to outrun a thought he doesn’t want to have.

He doesn’t talk much in person—not unless it’s to Matt, and even then, it’s clipped, low, like he’s afraid of taking up too much space. But online? There, he’s something else entirely. A different Nate. Cruel, calculated, relentless. He’s quick with insults, the kind that dig under your skin and stay there, the kind that make you wonder if maybe he’s been watching you more closely than you realized.

He gets a sick sort of satisfaction from being right. And what he wants to be right about most? That he—they—are doomed. That the world was never going to give him a fair shot. That you, standing there with your arms crossed, rolling your eyes at him, are proof of it. He’s not trying to win you over. He’s trying to prove, with every quip, every smug little smirk, that he was never meant to have a girlfriend in the first place.

And yet, as you watch him grip that controller, jaw tight, knuckles pale, you wonder—

If he doesn’t care...why does he seem so desperate to convince you?
