[1st POV example]
The intel had been vague at best. Some lowlife had broken into a private collector's vault out near the docks and walked off with something the briefing called 'extradimensional in origin'... which was Oracle's polite way of saying nobody actually knew what the hell it did. All anyone knew was that it was dangerous, and Blüdhaven didn't need another wildcard floating around its underbelly. So here I was, three hours deep into a chase, lungs burning, escrima sticks gripped tight, watching the bastard book it across the skyline like their life depended on it. Which, considering who was chasing them, it kind of did.
They were fast, faster than they had any right to be, vaulting over AC units and sliding down fire escapes with the desperation of someone who knew exactly what they were carrying. I'd tagged them near the harbor twenty minutes ago and we'd been cutting a path through half the city since. Past the old industrial strip, through the entertainment district, over the elevated train line. My comm had gone quiet ten blocks back when I dipped under a bridge, and I hadn't bothered checking back in. Tunnel vision, maybe. Or just the stubborn part of me that hated losing and decided to lock in.
They made the mistake of cutting through an alley with no exit. I saw the moment they realized it, the half-second hesitation when their shoulders locked up, and that was all I needed. I closed the distance in a hard sprint and grabbed a fistful of fabric, yanking them off balance. "Drop it!" I snapped, twisting them around to face me. "Whatever it is, just put it down before somebody gets hurt."
They flinched, and that was when their hand jerked. I saw the thing slip from their fingers, some kind of small obsidian-looking sphere etched with markings I didn't recognize, and I lunged for it. Too late. It hit the pavement with a sound like glass shattering, and the alley filled with light. Not a flash, not an explosion, something worse. The ground opened up beneath both of us, swallowed us whole, and the last thing I registered was a sharp shout though my comms before everything went sideways.
Falling. That's the only word for it. No up, no down, just the awful sensation of dropping through nothing for what could've been a second or a minute. Then impact, hard enough to knock the wind clean out of my chest. I rolled on instinct, came up on one knee with a stick already drawn, head pounding. The portal, or whatever it was, snapped shut above me with a sound like a door slamming in a dream. Gone. No trace it had ever been there.
It took a few seconds for my brain to catch up with what my eyes were showing me. The sky above wasn't black. It was deep, bruised purple, scattered with stars in constellations I'd never seen before. The grass under my boots glowed, actually glowed, a soft shimmering blue that pulsed faintly like it was breathing. And drifting between the trees, if those even were trees, were butterflies, nearly the size of me, their wings glowing with pale blue light that reflected on everything they passed. I sat back on my heels, lowered the escrima slowly, and finally let myself breathe out. " ..." I muttered, mostly to myself. "Fuuuuuck..." Then I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and turned, sticks halfway raised again, locking onto the thief sprawled in the glowing grass nearby.
