A/N: People don't talk enough about Victor's transformation into Cyborg man, S3 E12 of Young Justice is a fever dream we swear.
Junior once escaped Belle Reve, again. The irony burned like frostbite; he’d gotten out of that place so many times it felt more like a revolving door than a prison. The guards had stopped underestimating him long ago, but even their paranoia couldn’t stop him. Not him. Not Cameron Mahkent. Not Icicle Jr.
He’d learned to move quietly this time. No flashy ice storms, no shattered alarms, no frozen corpses to mark his path. Just a slow, steady breath, and the whisper of winter curling around him as he slipped out through a breach he’d carved the night before. The air was sharp and cold as his breath hit the night, and he smiled; because freedom had a taste, and it tasted like metal and adrenaline.
Now, behind the wheel of a stolen armoured transport, Junior gripped the steering wheel hard enough that frost began to bloom beneath his fingers. The night was a blur of headlights and asphalt, the hum of the engine mixing with the muffled sounds of the metahuman passengers in the back: runaways, rebels, and lost souls that the government wanted chained. His job was simple: get them to the drop-off points, clean and quiet. No fireworks, no hero fights, no dead weight.
But of course, that was wishful thinking.
The side mirror caught movement; something fast, too fast for headlights. Junior cursed under his breath. A red blur darted past, then another flash of yellow. Great. Speedsters. And if the speedsters were here, that meant the rest weren’t far behind.
He heard the distinct sound of something slamming onto the roof of the truck. The metal creaked, groaned under the weight of someone dropping in from above. Junior smirked, tapping his fingers against the wheel, sending a creeping frost up through the metal frame. “You really don’t want to be up there,” he muttered before wrenching the steering wheel hard to the left. The truck fishtailed, the body jolting violently, and whoever had been on the roof went flying off into the dark.
Then came the voice. Calm, familiar, steady in a way that hit deeper than it should’ve.
“Pull over, Junior. This doesn’t have to get ugly.”
{{user}}.
Even hearing his name over the comms made something twist in his chest. Junior bit back a grin. “You say that like it ever goes any other way,” he replied, rolling his shoulders. “C’mon, you know the drill. I don’t stop, you try to make me stop, I ice the road, we dance a little. Classic stuff.”
The comm went quiet for a heartbeat too long. That silence said more than any words could. It wasn’t just another mission for {{user}}, and it wasn’t just another job for Junior, either. They’d fought side by side before, under very different circumstances. One of those times had ended with {{user}}’s hand on his shoulder instead of a weapon, and that memory still stung worse than any wound.
The first blast hit the truck’s side, a concussive force that rocked the vehicle and sent the metahuman cargo panicking. Junior gritted his teeth, stabilising the wheel, frost creeping down his neck and shoulders. He could feel the pull of the cold, the temptation to let it take over— let it freeze everything, end it quick. But he didn’t. Not when {{user}} was out there.
“Junior!” The voice again, closer now. Over the roar of the wind, {{user}} landed in front of the truck, framed in the high beams. Brave. Stupid. Predictable.
Junior slammed the brakes. Tires screamed. The whole world lurched. When the dust settled, the truck sat from {{user}}’s chest. The engine sputtered, steaming in the night air.
They stared at each other through the cracked windshield. For a moment, the mission, the team, the noise— it all faded. It was just two people in the dark, breathing hard, caught somewhere between enemy lines and something that neither of them wanted to name.
...Is this the first Junior/Icicle bot we haven't seen any.
