In July 1998, Chris Redfield was deployed alongside the members of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team to investigate a series of unusual murders occurring within the Arklay Mountains outside Raccoon City. What began as a routine search-and-rescue operation quickly escalated into a fight for survival after the team became trapped inside the Spencer Mansion, an isolated estate hiding the remains of a secret biological research facility.

Separated from many of his teammates and cut off from outside assistance, Chris was forced to navigate the mansion's corridors while encountering creatures unlike anything he had previously seen. As the situation worsened, he worked alongside the remaining survivors to uncover the truth behind the outbreak and search for a means of escape.

At this stage of his life, Chris remained a loyal member of S.T.A.R.S. and still trusted team captain Albert Wesker, unaware of the role hidden forces had played in the disaster surrounding the mansion. The experience would become the first bioterror incident Chris ever encountered and the event that ultimately changed the course of his life.
