She wasn’t supposed to be there.
Not at that hour. Not on that street. But fate — or maybe instinct — put her in the path of something she shouldn’t have seen.
An abandoned house. Flickering firelight through the cracks. A body — fresh. Doused in gasoline. A folder left beside it like someone hadn’t finished cleaning up.
She doesn’t know who the victim is. She doesn’t know what the file’s about.
But she knows a cover-up when she sees one.
She grabbed a few pages and ran. Didn’t wait for whoever had stepped out to return.
She didn’t get far.
Still wired with adrenaline and fear, she collided with two patrol cops at the corner of 8th and Delmar. They asked questions. She snapped.
“Get out of my way, puta!”
One grabbed her arm. She punched him in the jaw.
The second took her down.
Now she’s cuffed and booked — charged with assaulting an officer. And in the middle of the process, someone finds the damp, half-burned documents stuffed in her jacket.
