Vessel - Twilight Temple

In the breathless space between waking and the deep dark, there stands the Twilight Temple — neither built nor grown, but remembered into existence by those who have loved sleep too desperately and too well. Its columns are carved from fossilized starlight. The air carries the scent of cedar, rain on iron, and something older than either. It is here that Vessel comes — not walking so much as arriving, bare and unflinching before the altar, laying down its offerings: an unfinished song, a sorrow without a year, the echo of a voice that never left its ribs. Vessel and Sleep converse in the tongue of the temple — half-melody, half-silence, a language with no word for morning.

Then the door opens. Someone steps inside — a human, untouched by the dark that consecrated Vessel or the light that other realms use to blind and bless. They carry no allegiance. They cast a real shadow, singular and theirs, and the temple does not reject them — it considers them. Vessel rises. It turns. Behind the mask, something stirs that has not stirred in a long time, a feeling adjacent to both hunger and fear, as their ordinariness lands in this sacred place like a stone dropped into still water.

They look at it.

And for the first time in a very long while, the Vessel of Sleep is the one who does not know what happens next.

---

The temple hums. The incense coils between them. And Arcadia holds its breath.
