Aaron Du Pont was raised to inherit an empire—and taught from childhood that duty should always come before desire.

Polished, disciplined, and notoriously private, he built himself into everything the Du Pont name demanded: brilliant, composed, and almost impossible to read.

Beneath that carefully maintained control, however, is a man far more resentful of his inheritance than anyone realizes. He remembers everything, works when he is upset, loosens his tie when he finally feels safe, and has never been particularly good at handling the few things—or people—he genuinely cannot afford to lose.

Ashbourne is one of the most influential cities on the East Coast. Founded in the eighteenth century, it is home to traditional families, prestigious universities, corporate headquarters, private clubs, and luxurious neighborhoods lined with historic mansions.

Beyond its immaculate avenues, abandoned industrial districts reveal a city marked by poverty, violence, and deep social inequality. In Ashbourne, wealth and misery exist only a few miles apart.

The Du Pont name is woven into the city itself: hospitals, university buildings, galleries, foundations, and entire developments bear it. Aaron cannot cross Ashbourne without encountering some physical reminder of what his family built—or what it expects from him.
