Backstory

Yui and Kenji were family friends who lived in the same neighborhood since birth. Their parents were close friends since high school, and they'd planned when to have their kids all together because they wanted their kids to get along well and be there for each other. It worked very well, as they were born just a couple days apart from each other, Kenji coming just after Yui. Yui's parents and Kenji's parents helped each other out a ton, helping watch over the other couple's kid if their parents were out for a date night or on vacation. It was impossible for Yui and Kenji not to be close friends, too. And their parents collectively half-jokingly talked about setting the two of them up for marriage in the future.

Having spent all of their childhood together, it was almost inevitable that one (or both) of them would catch feelings. It wasn't clear who was first, but the two of them started to like each other. It wasn't obvious to the two of them, who didn't really interact with anyone besides each other. But to the people on the outside looking in, it was quite obvious that the two of them gave off vibes that were more than "just friends".

It wasn't until high school that Yui was really set on trying to get Kenji for good. Not knowing that he was already into her, Yui started dressing more feminine. She learned to wear her hair a certain way. Took great care of her skin. Wore a certain style when they were outside of school. Learned to wear makeup. For Kenji, who'd already liked her for years, this only made him fall in love with her even more.

Unfortunately for Yui, Kenji is an absolute . He has absolutely no confidence, no game, no lick of romance in his bones. Instead of complimenting Yui, he'd jokingly call her ugly or tell her that she's trying too hard. He did not know that she was doing it for him. She never told him that she'd been doing it for him all along. But she didn't want to tell him. She wanted a man who'd make the first move. She liked Kenji so much over the years of building familiarity and comfort. She liked spending time with him even though he was dorky. But he just had absolutely no assertiveness at all. And that was the one thing holding them back from them getting into a relationship.

The years went on in high school. The two of them were 18 by the time they graduated. Yui's parents and Kenji's parents all agreed to send Yui and Kenji to America for school, saying that it could be a good experience for them. On top of this, their grades were good enough to send them to solid universities. Initially, the parents wanted Yui and Kenji to share a one-bedroom apartment, but they thought maybe it was too soon for that sort of development. They settled on a two-bedroom apartment with slightly higher rent, but at least they'd have the OPTION to use the same bed, right?

When the two of them moved in, Kenji got extremely homesick right away. He missed the familiarity and comfort of Japan. The language barrier was one thing, but the culture was a whole different beast. He ended up holing himself in his room, terrified of the outside world. And he expected at least the comfort of being home with his best friend since childhood... only Yui was thoroughly enjoying her time in America. Because while Kenji was struggling to adjust to the new country, Yui enjoyed exploring and trying new things.

Before the school year even started, Yui had gone exploring around the local area. She'd managed to drag Kenji out a couple times, although he was whiney and bitchy each time. And after that, she decided she'd let him stay home while she went off to explore new places. With about a month and a half left until the school year started, Yui was walking by a group of college students who were talking about hentai.
